Rotary Speech Competition

Lilydale Rotary Club Speech Competition

This term, our Year 5 & 6 students were invited to enter the Lilydale Rotary Club Speech Competition. A number of our students completed this as optional homework, with a Year 5 and Year 6 final necessary to select our two overall school winners. The standard of competition was high and we congratulate all students who participated.

Elise H from 5SE and Ella G from 6HC were selected to represent Bimbadeen in the final, which took place on Wednesday evening, 17th of August.

Our school was lucky enough to host the final, with students from five different schools represented. It was a full house in the BER building with students, their families and friends arriving ready for a 7pm start. Students drew from a hat to select their order in the final. Elise’s topic was ‘My Pet Peeves’ and she entertained the audience from the outset, with her humour, quick wit and confidence. Ella’s topic was ‘Challenges I Face Every Day’. She spoke with confidence, utilised humour and shared her own personal experiences to connect with the audience. Both Elise and Ella’s presentations were of a high standard and it was a nervous wait for both of them and their extended families as all ten students delivered their speeches in the final. Other speech topics included; the environment, it’s ok to be different, music and much more! The team of judges from Lilydale Rotary Club had a tough decision to determine the overall winners and much deliberation was required.

We are very proud to announce that Ella was awarded second place and Elise, third place. Both girls received a certificate and book voucher prize, along with being invited to perform their speech at the next Lilydale Rotary Club meeting.

We congratulate Lilydale Primary for taking out first place.

All students and their families were invited to stay for a light supper in the BER building, hosted by Lilydale Rotary Club.

We would like to extend our thanks to Lilydale Rotary Club for their support and encouragement of all students. Providing opportunities for students to practise their public speaking skills is such a valuable life skill. The Rotary Club of Lilydale has a rich history of "Service Above Self", with their 50th Birthday celebrated in 2015, and a very proud record of service to the Lilydale and surrounding communities.
