From the Head of Senior School

Mr Trent Chapman

Student Leadership

Prefects at Kinross Wolaroi are chosen in a consultative way, through application, interview, and feedback from students and staff. We look for students who have a balance of different gifts, talents and areas of involvement throughout the School. Our Prefects and House Leaders are known for their kindness as much their academic and sporting endeavours.

In recent weeks I have had the honour and privilege of being on the interview panel for the 2022/23 Prefect selections. We had 75 students apply for leadership positions and 21 students were shortlisted to be considered for the positions of Head Prefect (Boys and Girl), Deputy Head Prefect (Boy and Girl) and Boarding Prefect (Boy and Girl).

We had a diverse range of students apply for leadership, and it was pleasing to see an equal number of male and female students progress to the School Prefect interviews.

Overall, the caliber of responses was very high, and it was clear that many students had prepared thoroughly for the application process and School Prefect interviews. Many students expressed a desire to focus on building school culture and developing relationships across the year groups.

I take this opportunity to congratulate all students who put themselves forward for leadership.

Round Square Democracy Group

The Round Square Democracy Group consists of Year 11 students Elle Armstrong, Max Reidy, Maka Mutyiriu and Stephanie Wong. They have been tasked to be a voice for the students of Kinross Wolaroi School and provide them with a way to induce change.

Over the last term our Democracy Group has held several meetings inviting students from across the Senior School to raise issues and areas of concern. I recently met the team to discuss some of the main issues raised including upgrades and maintenance of some of the Senior School bathroom facilities, provision of student ID cards to new students and a request to discuss the current hair style rules of seniors.

I am in the process of following up on these matters and I will endeavor to meet with the Democracy Group at least once a term to discuss and action issues that impact on our students.

I thank our Democracy Group for their ongoing support, and I encourage students to attend democracy meetings to ask questions of our leaders and raise concerns.
