Hello, from our students and teachers.

News from Room 8, Ms. Hannah Douglas.

Literacy:

We have been exploring the importance of adding in description to our writing to ensure our audience stays interested. On Monday, Miss Douglas POPPED some bags of popcorn and we used our five senses to brainstorm adjectives to describe the popcorn. We obviously had to taste test the popcorn so we could fill in the taste section of our table!

We also took advantage of the glorious weather outside on Monday and found a comfy spot to sit and read our favourite books. We have been keeping an eye out for punctuation and tier 2 words in our books recently and have enjoyed sharing what we find with each other and as a whole class.

Numeracy:

Mass is the measure of how much matter is in a person, object or substance. This opened up an interesting discussion about how we weigh things and the language we use to describe mass. We investigated the terms 'grams, kilograms, lighter and heavier' and related them to real life by sharing objects that we know are described using those terms.

To further explore this, we picked five animals and researched their weight in grams or kilograms. Once we had found this information, we drew a picture of each animal and turned it into an information card that had the animal name, picture and weight in grams or kilograms. We worked with a partner to order the mass of our 10 animals from lightest to heaviest, which generated some interesting conversations and thought processes! Next week we are going to revisit our animal information cards and order the whole class worth of animals from lightest to heaviest using a number line.
