Opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students

Throughout the last few weeks of this term and in the early weeks of next term many of the Aboriginal students at the Senior School have engaged in workshops in which they have had the opportunity to make traditional palawa objects to be used for ceremonial purposes.

Year 7 and Year 8 students have been making clapsticks with wattle saplings harvested from their forest and bush surrounds and will learn to use them when creating music, dance and storytelling experiences for their peers and visitors. Later next term, the Year 9 and Year 10 students will use the roots of these same wattle trees to make themselves a wadi, a traditional hunting tool that the students will be able to keep at school for use in ceremony, dance workshops and in sessions where they will teach younger students about their culture.
