Seymour Alternate Farming Expo

A field of inspiration

On Friday the 15th of February, Mr Powell and Mr Mitchell, from our metal and wood technology area, took 38 students to the Seymour Alternate Farming Expo.

Leaving Cobram at 7.30am and returning at 4.00pm, this excursion gave all the students plenty of time to look around the Expo and gather ideas that they could use when producing projects in the metal and wood technology areas.

The Year 10, 11 & 12 students have a big focus on recycled materials and turning old things into new items. With a number of sites having CNC metal and wood items for sale, the expo provided a wide range of ideas. Computer numerical control (CNC) is the automation of machine tools by means of computers executing pre-programmed sequences of machine control commands. This is in contrast to machines that are manually controlled like the ones we have at school.

It is important that our students see what the local industries are using and that they understand what is required when they depart our school to start their own life in the engineering and building trades.

Other areas of interest were the different ideas any person could do on their own land. These included bee boxes and fertilizers used to enrich the soil enabling plants and vegetables to thrive. As teachers of VCAL PDS we gathered brochures so our students can decide what to use in the school planter boxes.
