MANNEQUIN CHALLENGE

I am sure many of you will have heard about and watched YouTube videos of the Mannequin Challenge. Sports personalities, celebrities and ordinary people have been recording their Mannequin Challenge to the music of Black Beatles so why not Year 7 McKinnon students! Earlier in the year, the students had used WeVideo to present their chosen country for Asia Week so the Mannequin Challenge was a great opportunity to practice these skills again.

Firstly, they used a YouTube converter site to download the Black Beatles song. Next, their teacher recorded the students in a variety of poses and shared the file with the students. Finally, both the video and song were imported into WeVideo and edited to produce the final production. The students had great fun doing this challenge and it was a great way to apply some of the skills they had learned in IT this year.

GROK CODE QUEST

It was great to see a few Year 7 and 8 students competing in the final Grok challenge of the Year. Three Year 7 students, Karleen Han, Michael Yang and Millie Graham, stepped up a level from their last challenge and managed to score a perfect score of 320 points at the Beginner level. A new recruit to Grok, Roger Hao of Year 8, also managed to gain a perfect score in the Beginners level.

The Grok challenges are great for students of all year levels to test their skills in coding and in further developing their resilience. Look out for a new batch of challenges next year!

WRITING PROGRAMS IN LUA USING CORONA SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT KIT

Year 10 students finished off their studies in Information Systems this year by looking at writing programs for mobile phones. The programs were written in a language called Lua and by using a Software Development Kit called Corona. Students were able to see how their programs would be seen on various different mobile devices using the Corona Simulator.

Some examples of student work are:

Amit’s Boom Box, where pressing on the coloured buttons provided various sounds which ran together.

Alex’s game where you need to click on falling items (click on the water drops but NOT the fires.

and Joshua’s running big cat.
