Commodore's Comments

Dear Members

It has been an interesting beginning to my first year as Commodore. The club and I are fortunate to have such a hardworking and competent Committee. Some of our focus has had to be on necessary background issues that are crucial to keeping the club functioning and well placed for the future, as well as the more publicised areas that we have been working on, in our continued efforts to keep our club as viable and attractive to old and new members alike.

While governance, maintenance, safety and risk management are not the most exciting of topics, it is vital in our role as Directors that we have the appropriate focus and attention to these key areas of the business. These issues are not always present to the average member but as a business we must ensure the day-to-day running of the Club is sound, safe and we are protecting and developing the sailing and financial interests for the Club and you the members.

Some of the fundamental areas of the business we have focused on include:

  • General asset register of crafts that are owned by the club;
  • Ongoing maintenance of fleet;
  • Development and employment of staff and coaches; and
  • Examination of service charges and a new fees structure that will enhance participation and be fair to all participants and stakeholders (as per the directives in the new constitution).

We are conscious that delivering our core business of sailing, sailing training and a great race environment requires a dedicated group of energised, focused and well-trained staff and volunteers.

I am confident we are making gains and meeting the expectation of the membership.

The culture of friendliness and overall presentation of the Club areas have been supported by previous committees and we will continue to promote these. With regards to this, please respond to the survey about the direction of the club that is being administered by Andrew Hammond. We are fortunate for Andrew’s willingness to provide the club with this refined level of support. We look forward to implementing the Members wishes that we will receive direction on through the survey’s results. Please ensure you have sent your submission to prscvision@westnet.com.au, or contact Andrew on 0417 903  945.

But that’s enough admin. We are a sailing club and there are some sailing related things (and social) that need to be acknowledged and some celebrated.

Firstly, well done on the SheSails initiatives. I look forward to hearing the report from those who have been actively engaged with this program. The early signs show great promise.

Secondly, the Winter Dinner was fabulous. Well done to Mitchell Spaanderman our Social Director for getting that off the ground. Keep it in mind for next year as it is a night well worth setting aside in your social calendar. Special commendation also needs to go to Sally and her ever reliable staff in the kitchen. The food was to her usual high standard.

Thirdly, to our club membership, I would like to thank those who regularly commit to club sailing, racing, training and those who volunteer in all capacities. The vibrancy and health of the Club is dependent on active boats and sailors competing regularly in our club racing. Congratulations not only to the respective winners of the previous sailing year as well as to all of those who raced and kept our fleet numbers strong. Here is to another strong year of competition!

Fourthly, apologies for anyone I have not acknowledged sufficiently, like Pamela, and those who provide refreshments at the club, as well as any items that I may have missed out. I thank and honour you all.

Brett Hawker, Commodore
