Performing Arts  Matters

As the COVID-19 virus continues to have a say in our lives, I would like to take this time to say thank you and well done for a great Term 1. Thank you to all the students who persevered with rehearsals, lessons and practice. We were able to provide music and drama for ceremonies, liturgies, Open Day and many more events that truly place the performing arts in the middle of College life. Thanks to the parents for your support especially Michelle Godfrey and PAPA who continue to support in many ways. Thanks also to all tutors, teachers and ensemble directors who continue to support and inspire our students.

On a different note, Geoff Power our brass tutor and director of Senior and Intermediate Jazz bands informed me recently that, sadly, Manly Council will not be supporting the Manly Jazz Festival this year; another casualty of COVID-19. This was an important date on our performance schedule and greatly anticipated by our students. Geoff has, however, informed me that band directors from different schools and community groups are planning an alternative event. We should have firm details shortly.

Many would have noticed the drive in Pius in Profile to raise funds for a bugle to be used at remembrance ceremonies, especially ANZAC Day. With the College’s unique and long-standing ties to Australia’s military history, this bugle will serve as a symbol of these ties.  Year after year we marvel at the performances by various trumpeters of the poignant Last Post and Revielle and it is hoped that even more authenticity and reverence will be added to these occasions. We will be able to hear and see this instrument for the first time at our ANZAC ceremony, on Day 2 of Term 2. Thank you to all who contributed.

Drama Matters

Term 2 Rehearsals and Extra Rehearsals for the 85th Anniversary Concert performance on Tuesday 17 May

Intermediate & Senior Drama Ensembles

Please ensure you take a look at the extra rehearsals we will be conducting next term. This is to ensure our performances at the 85th Anniversary Concert are well polished, and you feel comfortable in your roles. Look carefully as extra days and Sunday rehearsals have been added.

I am so excited to be working with you and I know we have had some great rehearsals already. Please ensure you learn your lines thoroughly over the holidays. When learning lines, it is best to speak them out loud, record them, write them down – all these techniques will help you become very comfortable. Spend about 20 minutes of focused learning and then go and do something else. Keep building up the time you spend on learning lines, and you will feel confident with them very quickly. Don’t forget your cues too! Intermediate Ensemble your Thursday rehearsal is in the Sarto at 3.30 pm. See you there!
