Grade 5 Health Day

On the last day of Term 1 all of Grade 5 students took part in a Health Day of which the focus was on personal hygiene.  Given the long lasting impacts of COVID, the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene practices have been highlighted.  Over the course of the day the students were learning about different aspects of personal hygiene, why it is important and strategies on how to maintain good personal hygiene.  To do this, students engaged in a range of activities including brainstorming, researching and creating a presentation of a specific aspect of personal hygiene, exploring cross contamination, evaluating handwashing techniques and discovering areas for improvement, prioritising hygiene products and determining frequency for different hygiene practices.  Here is a little sample from the day:

We watched videos about hygiene and talked about are what works and not works.

We learnt about hygiene and about how to stay clean and healthy.

I personally enjoyed doing the act/play and seeing what type of handwashing works.

We learnt how to wash our hands and which method was most affective.  We also explored all the different aspects of personal hygiene.

Jayde G

What I liked about Health Day the best was the Glitter Bug potion and how we used the UV lights to show where we had missed when cleaning our hands.  It looked really cool.

We learnt that using soap and water is the best method for cleaning your hands, better than wipes, just water or hand sanitiser.  It was fun to see how many germs we actually have on our body and hands and where they often hide.

Ben H

We talked about how to stay clean, healthy and more about different ways to clean yourself.

We learnt how to get germs off your hands and what works best to clean your hands.

I enjoyed experimenting with different ways to wash hands and stay clean.

Zac T

We learnt how to keep our personal hygiene up.  My favourite activity was the cross contamination one.  I didn’t realise how easy it is for germs to spread.

Lucas L

From the Health Day activities I realise that there are lots of places where we can pick up germs and how crucial it is to be hygenic.

I really enjoyed Health Day.  It was fun to see how many germs you can potentially have on your hands and where they oftern hide.  I liked the activity with the Glitter Bug potion which showed up the parts of your hands that you had missed when washing them.
