About ResourceSmart Schools

Sustainability Victoria’s ResourceSmart Schools program is an international award-winning program that provides practical support for schools to make cost savings, integrate sustainability into the curriculum and share learnings beyond the school gate.

The ResourceSmart Schools Program supports schools to take action on climate change by minimising waste, improving energy and water efficiency and promoting biodiversity to benefit their school and community.

Since 2008, over 1,400 Victorian schools have participated, saving 118,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases and $41 million. This is $26 million in energy savings, $9.5 million through waste reduction and recycling, and $5.5 million in water savings.

As at 1 March 2022, the schools participating in the program reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 15,075 tonnes CO2e, with $4.3 million in energy savings throughout the 2021 school year. ResourceSmart Schools is helping Victoria to transition to a zero-net carbon, circular economy by 2050.

ResourceSmart Schools supports Victoria’s Climate Change Strategy, by empowering school communities to reduce their emissions.
