I CAN Echuca

Through St. Joseph’s involvement in the Campaspe Youth Partnerships we are working together in the partnership group on a further next step towards embracing the possibilities of autism by bringing the I CAN Network to our secondary schools across Echuca.

The I CAN Network is Australia's first social enterprise founded by people with Autism, driving a rethink of Autism, from ‘I Can’t’ to ‘I CAN’. They mentor young people on the Autism Spectrum to live life with an ‘I CAN’ attitude. They bring out the ‘awe’ in AWEtism through education, advocacy and providing opportunities.

Campaspe Youth Partnerships is partnering with the I CAN Network, St. Joseph’s College, Echuca College and Echuca Specialist School after a successful mentoring program last year in Kyabram, with positive outcomes for young people on the Autism spectrum.

I CAN Network founder and CEO, Chris Varney, will be speaking to all students at the three schools on May 8 and there will also be a Combined Staff Professional Development session to be held at Echuca College 4pm-5pm and a Parent Information Night at St. Joseph’s College 7pm-8pm. Families from the three schools are welcome to come along to hear what this program is all about and express an interest in being involved.

Fifteen young people will have the opportunity to participate in the 10 week mentoring program in Semester 2. These programs are unique because they are designed, run by and based on successful young people on the autism spectrum. The aim is to inspire youths on the spectrum and their personal networks, to embrace the strengths of autism and take pride in their skills and abilities.

We are currently advertising for a Network Leader and Mentor for this program. These positions are for someone with suitable skills, has a strong connection to Autism and a passion for the strengths of Autism. The commitment would involve a fixed number of hours per mentoring session and availability during school hours. If you know of anyone in the Echuca area who might be interested in applying for either of these positions, please direct them to:
