Classroom News - Year 5

Gymnastics
The students have now attended 2 gymnastics sessions with Mr Wally O'Hara. They have demonstrated keen interest in all activities including somersaults, balance, bar work and static floor positions.
We will not have gymnastics this week due to Mass for the Feast of the assumption but will attempt to make the lesson up at another time.
Parent Interviews
Thank you to all the parents who were able to come in and have a chat about how your children are going. We were thrilled that so many of you could make it and felt reassured by the support that you continue to give to the Year 5 teachers.
Mathematics
This week we are talking about fractions. We are revising common fractions and moving on to consolidating our knowledge of equivalent fractions, improper fractions, mixed numerals and ordering of fractions on a number line.
English
The Big Writes are going very well and it wonderful to see the students preparing for their writing by completing their Talk Homework. At present, Blue Group do Big Write on Tuesday and Red Group do theirs on Thursday.
Blue Group have just started looking at a new text: Mirror by Jeannie Baker. We have had some interesting and insightful preliminary discussions.
Religion
With 2 important Feast Days within 2 weeks, we have been very busy learning about them as well as continuing our present unit of work on the early Catholic Church in Australia. The students have started a research task on the life and work of Caroline Chisolm.
Last week we celebrated the Feast of St Mary of the Cross and this Thursday we will attend Mass with our buddies to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption.
Classroom Supplies
Our classroom supplies of lead pencils and glue sticks have "disappeared" so we are asking that you purchase some inexpensive pencils and glue for your child's pencil cases...please!!
Hats
School hats are a part of our uniform and the children are very aware that they need to be wearing them at school. However, many students are regularly without their hats and this is becoming problematic with some. Please reinforce the positives of wearing a hat...interesting hairstyles do not excuse a student from wearing their hat.
Mrs Scully and Mrs Croft
Mrs Scully has now commenced her maternity leave and we hope to hear of the safe arrival of her new bub before too long. It is such an exciting time!
We welcome Mrs Croft to Year 5. She will be teaching on Fridays and we are super happy to have her back with us.
