Around Grade 5/6

Learning Collaboratively and Celebrating Success

During the latter half of Term 2, we have learned about figurative language both in reading and writing. When working at a Grade 5/6 level, students are expected to be able to both identify and use examples of figurative language such as: similes and metaphors to make comparisons; idioms to help craft an authentic author's voice; and onomatopoeia ('sound' words) and alliteration to add interest when writing a poem or story.

Here are some activities that we enjoyed completing:

Examples of onomatopoeia from Grade 5/6H
Senses poems: Here are a selection from the Grade 5/6 students from all four grades. The idea was to choose an animal and write a short poem that addressed each of the five senses.
