Year Five and Six Camp Brownlow Awards

A wonderful tradition at the Junior School is awarding the Camp Brownlow medals.  At the conclusion of an upper primary camp, students, College staff and Auscamp leaders vote 3-2-1 for the students who have displayed the College values of compassion, gratitude, optimism, resilience and respect.

This year’s Brownlow Medal recipients are;

  • Year Five Blue Tribe - Lucas Rouse
  • Year Six Yellow Tribe - Ruby Hausler
  • Year Six Green Tribe - Sam O’Sullivan

Congratulations to all three students for being excellent role models and leaders in our school.

Tournament of Minds

This year we have one Year Five and one Year Six team entered in the 2021 Tournament of Minds competition. Tournament of Minds (TOM) is an International educational program developed for creative students across all sectors of primary, intermediate and secondary school education. It provides a dynamic approach to learning, whilst developing students’ enthusiasm for experimentation, problem finding and problem-solving.  Students are grouped into team structures and undertake one of the four discipline groups: STEM; The Arts; Language Literature; and Social Sciences. Team members work together for six weeks - without assistance from teachers, parents or peers - to develop a creative way to communicate their solution to a panel of judges and an audience, working within pre-determined parameters, complex criteria and the deadline of Tournament Day.  This year, COVID 19 restrictions have facilitated a move to an online competition.  Teams will upload a video presentation.  We wish both teams the best of luck.  Thank you to Mrs. Robertson for all her organisation of our 2021 teams.

Jeans for Genes Day

Tomorrow the Junior School will be taking part in the annual ‘Jeans for Genes’ Day.  Students and staff will be ‘donning the denim’ and raising money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.  The 1 in 20 kids facing a birth defect or genetic disease are used to hearing words like “incurable” or “lifelong effects”.  It doesn’t have to be this way.  Right now, scientists are working on gene therapy to find cures for previously incurable genetic diseases. A genetic disease is a serious condition caused, at least in part, by changes in our DNA.  While often inherited, many happen ‘out of the blue’ due to chance occurrences.  Please bring a gold coin donation to support this great cause.

Hockey

Division 5 Kangaroos had an impressive 6-1 win over Coleraine Red.  The team played well, with plenty of entries into the attacking D. Goals were scored by Camilla Edgar, Maggie Mercer and Hugo Cameron.

Division 4 Tassie Devils had a comprehensive 11-0 win over Coleraine.  Goal scorers included Fergus Giles, Arbella Little, Sophie Spence, Tom Templeton (3), William Templeton, Dougal White (2), Alex Donovan and Olivia Edgar.  Tassie Devils are finding form at the right end of the season and have moved move to the top of the Division 4 table.  Best on ground were Dougal White, Tom Templeton, Will Templeton and Olivia Edgar.

Division 4 Bandicoots defeated Drop Bears 4-2 in an entertaining match played in the pouring rain at the Neil MacLean Field.  Both teams did not want to give an inch, and were competitive throughout.  Bandicoots were certainly the better team on the day and deserved their win.  Goal scorers for Bandicoots were Chloe Laidlaw, Rupert Merrin, Sophie Merrin and Ava Mould.  Olivia Reid and Charlie Jarvis scored for Drop Bears.  Best players for Bandicoots were Sam McDonald, Sacha Laidlaw and Harry McDonald.  Best on ground for Drop Bears were Harry Lyons, Charlie Jarvis and Abby Lazzari.

The SSV Hamilton Hockey 7s has been rescheduled to Friday 13 August at Pedrina Park.  Matches will commence at 10.00 am, with finals at around 1.30 pm.
