In SLC, we are learning to convert units of measurement by using the Metric Ladder/Staircase system. This is a quick and simple way to convert most units of measurement in the metric system.
The Metric Ladder/Staircase gives the students an easy outline of how many places they have to move a decimal point. This system is useful for dividing numbers by 10, 100, or 1000 and also helps with knowing how many 0’s to add or multiplying by 10, 100, or 1000.
The students also noticed a pattern and as a class, we made our own rule for the Metric Staircase which is, “if we are going up the staircase we have to move the decimal place or divide by 10, 100, or 1000 and if we are going down the staircase we have to add zeros or multiply by 10, 100 or 1000.”
An example of this would be, if we were trying to convert 1 metre into centimetres, we would have to move down the staircase two steps and add two zeros or multiply by 100 and get the answer of 100 centimetres. We also can’t forget once we go up or down the staircase we have to convert the unit of measurement.
Students in SLC are preparing to make their Sacrament of Confirmation and so they have been learning about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts include Knowledge, Piety, Understanding, Fortitude (Courage), Wisdom, Counsel, and Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe) which are given to us by God and are part of who we are.
Gifts of the Holy Spirit are gifts that we should all try to show in our everyday lives. These include Knowledge, Piety (Reverent), Understanding, Fortitude (Courage), Wisdom, Counsel, and Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe).
This fits in with our focus for this term in Religion, which is ‘Sacred People’ in our Catholic tradition. These 'Sacred People' have shown these gifts amidst the hardest of circumstances and it is through displaying these gifts they became saints.
SLC have also been learning about courage in Bounce Back which is the Social and Emotional Wellbeing Program we use across the school. This week, we discussed what makes a person courageous, we all shared our ideas with each other and made a poster using these ideas. This poster will be up in the SLC room for the rest of the year to encourage all of our students to demonstrate our school motto which is to be 'Strong and Courageous' in everything they do.
Kind Regards
