Sizzling Starts and Maths

JLC students have again embraced the challenge of remote learning with positivity and smiles. It’s a challenging time for everyone and I’d like to thank all parents and students for their ongoing work and support at home.

This week in Writing, students reviewed their understanding of Sizzling Starts, which is one of the steps in the Seven Steps to Writing Success program we use across our school. A Sizzling Start is when the beginning of the story starts in an exciting manner, such as describing some action that is occurring.

The children gave Miss Wills a topic to write about and she showed them a WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like). Then the children had a go themselves using the topic, ‘There is a Tree in the Playground That’s Eating Children!’

Here are some more WAGOLLs from the children:

There is a swing in the yard hanging from a giant mysterious tree. Gulp! As the kids would swing happily, the tree sucked them up like a furious tornado!

I just noticed my friends were disappearing. I thought they were hiding in the trees. I climbed up the tree and then I got gobbled up!

“AHHHH!”, yelled the boys and girls as they were running away from the child-eating tree. The tree was hopping all over the playground grabbing children with its tongue and eating them.

Oh no! There is a tree eating the children on the playground. One of the children said, “Don’t eat me. I will give you all my food. I have got lots of food.” The tree only likes eating 12-year-olds.

During Maths this week, we have continued our work with data and graphing. The children worked on a bar graph this week, ensuring they represented the information and data on the correct axes. The children also took their work with data a step further as they were required to use a legend to decipher the data they were given before creating their graph.

As we continue online learning, we try to ensure that the children have moments through the day to move their bodies and laugh together.  All the children regardless of if they are at home or online are able to participate in Go Noodle, an interactive video that requires the children to follow instructions. These are considered a 'brain break' and prove to be a very popular moment in the day.

Please enjoy the below Go Noodle which you might enjoy having a go at over the weekend.

Kind Regards
