Greenforce and Student Representative Council

Recently, some of our SLC students including our Greenforce Captains attended the 2021 Boroondara Student Sustainability Leadership Summit. Our students were given an opportunity to make a presentation in relation to sustainability on a topic of their choosing. This was a wonderful chance for our students to practice their public speaking skills and to engage with like-minded students from across our district. Below is a piece from one of our Greenforce Captains on their experience of the Summit.

"Our school group of 10 students, including the Greenforce Captains based a presentation on energy and how to save it. We gave the students who attended from a variety of schools ways in which they could save energy in both their household and their school. We did this through fun games that we presented on the day of the Summit. Some of the other groups that we saw talked about bees and honey, in which they shared an important message. That is, to not kill bees as they do good things in this world for humans such as making honey and pollinating flowers. My favourite part of the Sustainability Summit was seeing what other schools presented and created. I also enjoyed learning about how I need to step up and take action in our own school. Our plan of action is to have more wrapper free lunches or nude food lunches to reduce waste at our school." - SLC Student

Recently, Mr Brophy who leads our Student Representative Council spoke with a couple of our SRC members about their experiences in representing the student body. The children discussed what they have been able to contribute to the council and what they hope to be able to continue to work on in the future. Please enjoy the below pieces from two of our SRC members of 2021.

Antonio -

What I liked most about being an SRC member is making decisions about things in and around the school. We are able to help people by coming up with solutions to their problems.

One thing we accomplished as SRC in Semester 1 was coming up with an idea to create a student voice box that students could put ideas into anonymously or something that is worrying them.

In my time as an SRC member, I learned about working as a team and how difficult it can be to make decisions for other people. It can be hard to make decisions that make everyone happy but it was fun to be a part of a team.

One thing I would change about SRC if I had the chance is to have everyone work together and listen to each other more. It can be hard for some people who are shy and quiet to share their ideas when everyone has ideas that they are trying to share.

Hassan -

I am excited about being an SRC member because I get to attend meetings and discuss ways to make the school a better place to learn and have fun. I like the idea of attending meetings with other members and talking to the class about what we discussed during those meetings.

I hope to be able to have valuable input at these meetings, sharing my ideas to further develop the school.

I am most looking forward to meeting new students during these meetings.

One thing I would like to change as an SRC member is to purchase new sports equipment for the sports shed which all year levels will be able to play with at recess and lunch. I would also like to clean the drink taps.
