Marriage and Family Week

The Family: I am with you always

The quotation used as the theme for 2021’s Marriage and Family Week, “I am with you always”, is found in Jesus’ “Great Commission” to his apostles and to all his followers, including us. We find it at the very end of Matthew’s gospel; “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

(Matthew 28;18-20)

In saying he would be with them always, Jesus was building on a concept with which his followers, all Jews, were familiar. It was and is part of the Jewish understanding of life that God, having called them to be his people, is in an unbreakable covenant relationship with them.

The Family and God being with us.

Christians know that God lovingly reveals Godself to us his people. This happens in many ways. One of those ways is through any relationship where genuine human love is present, because “God is love” (1 John 4:8). As long as the family is a place of genuine love, God is making Godself  known to the family-members as individuals and to the family as a whole. So we can truly say that, for most people, God is with us always in and through our families.

God’s presence can sometimes be experienced as  something dramatic in our lives. But those events are rare. Most people, even many Saints, could not point to an occasion or event in their lives where they sensed God was present in a dramatic way.

Vinnies Winter Appeal

On Thursday the College came together for the annual Vinnies Winter Appeal. Each year at O'Connor, students and staff respond to the call out for warm clothing and blankets. This year the response was fantastic and the baskets were presented during the liturgy which was held during the morning.

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church was closed. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
