Building Update -
St Madeleine Sophie Barat Centre
With our new building very close to completion, a name most aptly significant has been chosen. Sophia Education Ministries have given approval for the new building to be officially named the St Madeleine Sophie Barat Centre. In-house, we shall endearingly refer to the building as the Sophie Centre.
As a Sacred Heart School, we find our meaning and purposes in the educational vision of our foundress St Madeleine Sophie Barat, who founded the Society of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) in 1800, in the aftermath of the French Revolution.
Sophie was courageous, a risk taker, an agent of change and able to bring others with her. She believed in forming both a student’s character and intellect as she saw the importance of bringing together our head and heart in all we do.
Sophie’s own education under the tutelage of her brother, Louis, was comprehensive and encompassed the study of languages, history as well as Science providing Sophie with an education rarely available to young women and girls at that time. In the same way, our new building bridges the divide between the arts and sciences, educating our girls to affirm women’s rightful place in science, technology, mathematics and the cross disciplinary studies in design and arts.
Hence, we are delighted with the name of our new building as our St Madeleine Sophie Barat Centre captures the very spirit and vision of our foundress.
