Debutante Days
Debutante balls (or "deb balls") were a feature of schools for many years. The debs wore white gowns and their partners wore a tux or other formal suit. In preparation for the evening, the couple learnt how to ballroom dance, often amidst moments of great hilarity. Hopefully no toes were injured on the big night!
The Alumnae Association was responsible for organising the dances but sadly they were discontinued due to dwindling numbers – the last was held in 1995.
The photo above is from 1958. The debs in 1958 were presented to the Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks, and Lady Brooks at the St Kilda Palais. A photo even appeared in a newspaper article describing the event.
We also have the debs from the class of 1987 at their ball in 1988.
Von Trapp Family visit to Sacré Cœur
The recent passing of Christopher Plummer who played Captain Von Trapp in the 1965 movie The Sound of Music, prompted an alumnae to call ABC radio to reminisce about a very special visit to Sacré Cœur.
Ten years before the movie, Sacré Cœur welcomed the real Maria. In 1955 Baroness von Trapp and the Trapp Family Singers toured Australia and performed in our Chapel.
Here we have the visitors’ book signed by the group alongside a photo of students welcoming the Baroness (with Mother Kathleen Meagher in the background).
For all the Sound of Music fans, here is a link to an interesting piece on the family written by an American archivist.
Can you help to add to our archive collection?
We are always appreciative when alumnae are able to donate or loan precious items to the school for the archives collection.
We would especially love to receive some more photos and memorabilia from the 1970s.
Photos can be scanned and returned to you.
