Nano Nagle looked after the poorest children in Cork, Ireland during the 1700s. She did so during a difficult time for the oppressed Catholic Irish community. She would walk the streets at night using a flame lit lantern to guide her through the dark alleyways, often in rain and cold weather. When she found these hungry, lonely children, she would take them to a safe place to sleep, feed and educate.

Sr Raphael Consedine wrote the following about Nano Nagle in 2001,

“If Nano Nagle was alive today, she would win the Nobel Peace Prize.”

She went on to say the following.

“In the face of fear, she chose to be daring,

In the face of anxiety, she chose to trust,

In the face of impossibility, she chose to begin.

What will you choose to do today?”
