Welcome to Ivanhoe Primary School,
If you have a sibling of a current student, and you are intending to enrol them here at IPS for the 2024 school year and are yet to do so, it is absolutely critical that the school office is made aware of this by Friday 28th July.
Enrolments
After Friday 28th July, to be compliant with the Department of Education’s new directive, we must move to enrol “out of area” waitlisted students to fill any enrolment gaps.
Any enrolments from our zone, after classes are filled, will of course be accepted, but this will drive up class numbers, and may cause other “flow on” effects.
Over the years, we have endeavoured to keep our Foundation class numbers lower than many other schools by carefully managing our numbers. Please help us to help you, by enrolling your child by Friday if you have not already done so.
Athletics Day
On behalf of the community, I thank James Bull and the teaching and education support staff for organising and managing the Year 3 to Year 6 Athletics Day last Thursday. Not only did Mr Bull have to anticipate the weather, for it rained almost as soon as the students were on the bus, but he deftly managed the venue when managers attempted to cancel the booking two days from it running. It was very cold but the students enjoyed the day and participated enthusiastically in their chosen activities. Thank you to the parent helpers who came and assisted us.
Disco Fever
Thank you PFA, in particular to Lance Greenwood (and his daughters), for organising and running the IPS disco on Friday night. Both sessions were very well attended and once again well supported by volunteer parent helpers. The most well attended IPS Disco in living memory with 450 students in attendance. Our canteen manager Annette donated all the icecreams that were sold on the night. The proceeds of which, including the gold coin donations totalled $1516.00 all of which enables the PFA to manage their community events and supports the schools program.
The heart and soul of the disco were, of course, DJ Freeze and DJ Ice aka Mrs Morrow and Mrs Blanas who kept the party going with their pumping beats and cool moves. A huge thank you to both of them for their time and energy.
Please read Lance Greenwoods "rap" up of the Disco on the Music Page in this issue of "Inside Ivanhoe".
Coming up
I hope you'll join us at our next events, including: Trivia Night, Fathers Day Breakfast, Andrew Wake Parent Night and our IPS Fair.
Our front garden
Our front garden is looking very tired and overgrown. In previous years, students have engaged in gardening and propagating a variety of plants as a part of the curriculum. While a small band of dedicated parents have tried to keep the front garden the delightful place it can be, it has got beyond us. We have contacted Connecting2Australia, a not for profit registered NDIS provider who will come and rejuvenate our school front garden followed by monthly visits to maintain it. C2A’s Employment opportunities provide purpose, skills training, and personal development for people with a disability. They bring financial independence, choice, and community inclusion, for people with a disability.
Thank you
Thanks to Rob Pearce, father of our Business Manager, lisa Cascun and Mr Leighton Pearce for dropping in on Thursday and spending a few hours in our front garden. He is improving the outlook for our roses that border our front entrance to the school. Rob will be back next week to feed them.
We look forward to the front garden being in a fit state to once again be considered to augment our student learning programs.
2024 Year 5 Camp
In 2024 the Year 5 Camp venue will be Sovereign Hill from the 9th – 11th September. IPS has used Camp Coonawarra for many years but we feel that the Sovereign Hill experience will tie in beautifully with the Term 3 History unit of work ‘ The Gold Rush.’
OSHC Educators' Day
Wednesday was National Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) Educators' Day and this year's theme is “At the Heart of the Community”. Please join me in thanking our coordinator (Lexi), assistant coordinator (Sarah) and all the staff for the joy and care they provide to our students.
Planned maintenance program and a new sandpit
I mentioned last week that there is some substantial planned maintenance to occur between now and the end of the year. Some of that work will attempt to alleviate the drainage issue that plague our OSHC program. If you use the service you will have seen the flooding that occurs around the bottom gate. Contributing to the problem is the sandpit in front of the OSHC garden. The sand has impacted both the garden and the drainage. Having searched for a new place to have a sandpit that the OSHC program can access, we have selected the area where the broken table tennis table is. All other spaces interfere with our proposed planned maintenance program.

Finally ...
At the heart of every community is its people. Simply put, a community stands for basic values such as trust, respect and looking after one another. And when you compare these to the values of our school, a clear similarity emerges. We spend a lot of time building student understanding in our five school values. Please seize the opportunities that arise at home and away from school to talk about Confidence, Independence, Persistence, Resilience and Respect and what that means to you. Then tie them back to how your experiences relate to the school community.
Here are some examples: we focus on positive behaviours and good citizenship. Everyone has the right to feel safe at school. Our School Values are Confidence, Independence, Persistence, Resilience and Respect.
It is up to all of us to bring our values to life and present them in a way that makes sense. Here are some examples.
Persistence - is not giving up, having more than one go at something, trying again when you get something wrong or just practicing to do your best.
Resilience - Resilient people often feel good about themselves. There is a difference between people who bounce back easily and those who get frustrated. If you can learn to bounce back you’ll do better at everything in life.
Confidence - Self-confidence is the belief in yourself and in your abilities. That you can do it. When you experience success, you feel good inside and you want to do better.
Independence – Our aim is to ensure that every student is able to develop into an adult capable of looking after themselves, to thrive on the challenges that life throws at us, to experiment sensibly with risks and develop your own ways of doing things successfully.
Respect - Is thinking and acting in a way that shows others you care about their feelings and their well-being.
Our stars are those that demonstrate our school values and set an example to our community . Behaviours that disrupt learning and teaching will not be tolerated.
Have a great week.
