Principal's Message

My goodness, it is bitterly cold in Melbourne now isn’t it!  However, there is some hope for warmer weather as we managed to have at least three to four days of sunshine last week.

For me, I was overseas for much of the holidays on an International Student Recruitment Trip with the International Education Division.  On the trip we visited agents and met with many families who were seeking to send their children to a Victorian Government School.  Victorian Government Schools have a reputation for delivering an excellent educational experience for students. I travelled with six other schools from different areas of Melbourne that also have an International Student Program.

In the first week of term 3 we held the Careers and Subject Selection Expo for students in Years 9 – 12.  This expo was to allow students to meet with teachers of various subjects and ask them questions about electives and subjects for 2024.  It was very well attended by the students, and I thank Simone Bouchier, our Careers & Pathways Coordinator, for all her work organising the event.

This week the students will also be provided with additional information on how to select their subjects for next year.  From next week those same students will begin to enter this information into the subject selection program.  I encourage all parents to have a conversation with their child so that they can consider all available options.  Breadth of subjects is just as important as depth, particularly in Years 9 and 10. This is because it is often to early for students to narrow down their views on what their career pathway will be. When students approach VCE it is also important to reference the Morrisby Testing which provides an insight into the skills, interests, and strength. At MGSC, we run subjects based on student choice rather than predetermining the subjects (apart from English).  This means that the students have a say in what subjects will be run the following year.  The students will find out later in the term what subjects they will be undertaking in 2024.

As I write this message, the Music Camp is taking place. This is an opportunity for all the music students to work together and prepare for the winter concert. I am looking forward to seeing them perform.

Stay warm and well.
