Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw Marist host Padua College in tennis and basketball, as well as hosting the entire round for rugby league, which saw all six AIC rugby league schools play at Ashgrove. It was a huge and enjoyable day for the College. Thank you to the parent volunteers who assisted particularly in the three canteens that were running, as well as the staff who went over and above to make sure it was a smooth event. Special mention to Mr Ryan Apps, our Rugby league Coordinator, for all your work on the day and in the organising of the day. It is a huge role in getting ready for the home round.

All three main codes enjoyed a strong day across the board with basketball winning 19 matches to 12 and the firsts winning 80-56 in a dominant display from start to finish. Tennis enjoyed a strong day as well 14-2 with the firsts winning 6-2. Rugby league enjoyed a strong day against Padua, one of the AIC powerhouses in rugby league, although the firsts were on the end of 36-4 loss as Padua played their best match of the year, we did enjoy a good set of results across the board.

This weekend sees Marist playing against Iona College, with Marist hosting all the primary rugby league matches and the senior teams are at Villanova. In basketball and tennis the senior teams are at Iona, with the juniors here at Ashgrove.

Four C’s For Sport

I am a big believer in process. You will rarely (never) see me being demonstrative or aggressive or emotional on the sidelines at sport, either as an administrator or as a coach. Firstly, it is not my nature, but more importantly, from my playing days, my coaching experiences and now in administration, I am a firm believer that to be successful in sport the work needs to be done in the lead-up. Gameday is for the players. Winston Churchill style speeches rarely work, and if a coach is relying on them on a regular basis questions should be asked about their training and preparation.

I will give you an example of preparation and outcome. Without trying to embarrass him, our 1st XI cricket team were not favourites to win the AIC premiership, but Mr Abbott came on board this year and had a clear plan, he built relationships to work with the players, he drove the standards and expectations from day one and he was flexible enough to adapt where it was needed. The rest as they say was history and we fought out a terrific campaign to secure the premiership.

For me, our programs should be built on four principles for sporting performance: concentration, confidence, control and commitment, and they are often underpinned by one single C…courage. We as coaches and teachers need to develop these attributes within the boys, and boys need to give of themselves to allow us. Concentration is about being focused- at training that is on the work, developing the skills (mental and physical) to perform the attributes required for that sport or activity. Confidence comes from knowing you have the skills and ability to execute under pressure. Control can take many forms, for us control is executing the skill but doing it regardless of the situation, and also in maintaining control of yourself regardless of what is going on around you, regardless of the provocations and noise that can happen in competitive sport. Commitment is vital in getting better and dedicating to hard work, putting the team before self, and the requirements of the role being asked to perform over any personal desires or rewards. They all come together to form courage. The courage to play front foot…to play with freedom…to lose…to win…to make mistakes…to take extraordinary risk.

An example of the 4 C’s in action worth checking on YouTube is our own Old Boy John Eales, in the last minute of a Bledisloe Cup match in New Zealand in 2000 with Australia 2 points behind, the cup on the line, and he never looked like missing. Confidence in his ability to execute, concentration to remove the noise around him, commitment through dedicated practice over many years, control to take the emotion out of the situation and the courage under extreme pressure, the whole country on his shoulders, to get the job done. Australia has won one match in New Zealand since, losing 27. The 4 C’s in action.

Hockey

Ms Kathryn Badini - Hockey Coordinator

It was a big week for the Hockey team with a double header against our fellow AIC schools – Wednesday against St Edmund’s at the State Hockey Centre and Friday against Padua at Burringbar Park.

Our Wednesday game was always going to be a tough gig and unfortunately, we went down 5-1. The scoreline does not reflect how many unlucky shots we had at the net and the great saves that our defence and goalkeeper, Zander Holliday (12), managed. But some good lessons were learnt.

Luckily, we were able to regroup with a 9-nil win against Padua where we certainly had most of the attack. In the end, it was a hat trick for Matt Alverez (8), two apiece from our powerhouses, Isaac Pratt (11) and Oliver Shinkel (11), a great tomahawk goal from Daniel Thirgood (9) and, before getting injured, Nick Keir (12) managed a brilliant goal as well. In the end, we had three goals coming in-field, three from short corners and three from tomahawks – with Matt getting one of each.

What’s more heartening than the score line was how the team recovered from Wednesday and supported each other on the field. It is always a sight to see players from every grade in Years 7 to 12 playing together, especially when they are playing as one and having fun out there. The sportsmanship of our side also came to the fore in what turned out to be a fairly heated game.

Thank you to the Year 12s who came out to support as well as Bonita Gerry who is now knocking up a couple of game plays for us.

Good luck to Damon Johnston (7) who is off to Hobart representing Queensland in the SSA Hockey Championship. He is a worthy recipient of our number 1 jersey, so we are expecting great things from him. Congratulations also to Harrison Lunn (10), Lincoln Stockwell (9) and Daniel Thirgood (9) who have been named in the Brisbane 3 Under 15 Team for the Coulter Shield on the 15th of August.

This week, we take on Brisbane Grammar School – who are new to the competition and are our current threat to qualify for the Grand Final – at Burringbar Park.

The conditions were tough, with very few golfers shooting their handicap across the nine schools competing. The Marist team, consisting of Frank Piper, Will Nickelson, Jackson Williams, Tom Williams and Flynn Connolly performed well finishing fifth of nine in teams competition and Jackson Williams finished eighth overall in the individual competition.

I would also like to acknowledge our coaches, support staff, spectators and parents for all the support you give us constantly. Our teams are developing every session and building into a strong unit in all age divisions.

Marist Basketball – Round 2 vs. Padua College

1st V

Marist 80 – Padua 57

1st V Coach’s Report

Saturday saw the 1st V host Padua at the Champagnat Centre in a must-win game for both schools. We invited our 1st V Old Boys, and it was great to see them sitting courtside. Our first quarter didn’t disappoint, high-energy defence and selfless offence had the team firing on all cylinders. Will Ford poured in an incredible 18 first-quarter points, scoring from deep, at the rim and getting to the foul line. We skipped off to a commanding 30-16 first-quarter lead. We kept the subs coming and continued to apply the pressure to Padua throughout the second quarter. Getting stops defensively led to easy transition baskets and some handy outside shooting from Matt Gibson and Jack Forrester helped us enjoy a comfortable 48-27 lead at the half. Unfortunately, we came out a little sleepy to start the 3rd quarter and Padua scored the first 13 points of the half to cut the margin to 8. The boys regrouped and tightened up defensively to shift the momentum back to our favour. We steadied the ship and behind big scoring games from Will Ford (30), Jack Forrester (20) and Matt Gibson (16) we ran out comfortable winners 80-57. We have a massive two games coming up against Iona this weekend before hosting AIC favourites St Peters the week after Ekka Break.

1st V Captain’s Report

After a close loss in round one to Villanova College, round two against Padua college was crucial to keeping the season alive. Being the home game for rugby league, and tennis and being basketball’s inaugural Old Boys’ Day, the team was able to draw energy from the hive that came in numbers. With many players set to make their 1st V debut, including Isaac Deem, Will Lathwell and Austin Beaman, nerves were high in the dressing room. Despite this, our ability to lock in once on the floor allowed us to get off to a flying start helping secure a win with the final score of ….

A few notable performances from the game included Will Ford’s masterclass from the 3-point line hitting 4 threes in the first quarter. Jack Forrester’s ability to get to the rim and shoot from the three, whilst Spencer Mahoney played an enormous role on the defensive end. A special mention must be given to Matt Gibson for rolling his ankle in the first quarter before later returning to the court and playing through it.

With Round 3 quickly approaching, the team has another crucial game against Iona to keep the season alive. I invite all of you to support the team for our first away game at 12:15 at Iona College to help us get across the line. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis

Our weekend started well with all boys turning up on time and warming up before hitting balls which is important to get the body moving and blood circulation working well. Many times, I see boys not treating warm-up sessions before hitting balls as not necessary. This is very important with Tennis players as we are constantly using our feet and legs, and if they do not move then you will not play to the level that you are hoping to play on the day. When you see a great tennis player it is always the footwork going into the shot that makes him stand out from the rest. If it were easy, we would all be on the circuit earning millions.

With that in mind, I must congratulate all the captains who have taken it upon themselves to lead by example in warm-up sessions before matches. Let’s keep it going boys.

Our weekend saw great wins to all primary teams and all year levels had wins except for two teams which was great.

From 16 matches Marist was able to win 14 of them including a clean sweep in all the open teams.

A special mention to our 2nd and 3rd teams for completely dominating their opponents. Our 4th team also won in style with a hard-fought win.

First Report

1st IV team started with a fantastic meet and great with the opposing team and then prepared for battle of the day. Both teams were looking for weaknesses in each other’s teams with the first doubles matches played to the delight of the many spectators there to watch. Great to see the crowds are getting bigger each week.

Eddie and Fletcher won easily and Henry and Hamish went down 5-7 in a close match that could have gone either way.

  1. and the 4 singles to come.

Henry playing extremely well to lose in a close 3rd set tiebreak 9-11.

Eddie winning in a very tight struggle in his match.

Hamish also winning in a hard-fought match where he learned to grind out a win through sheer determination.

Fletcher who demolished his opponent 6-0 6-0 could not have been faulted in the way he played his match.

4-2 up and ahead on sets we had secured the tie, but we still had 2 more matches to take care of first.

Eddie and Fletcher against the top pair found themselves down 1-4 early on but somehow turned it around to come back and win the set against all odds.

Henry and Hamish also winning in a close set to see us win 6-2 in matches and put us in a great position for the season.

After seeing the results from the weekend Marist and Peters are the only two teams still undefeated so early in the season.

This week we have a tall order against last year’s winners in Iona College who will be looking to knock us off.

Marist Open Singles Championships

We are fast approaching this year’s Singles Championships and we are taking entries from any boy from year 7 upwards who would love to play this event.

The event is held on Monday 14 August and Tuesday 15 August. Matches will start at 3:30pm and run till about 7:00pm. Tuesday will be all Finals. We will be holding a separate tournament for those who do not progress from their round-robin groups.

There is no coaching of any sort during this week only this tournament.

I would expect every student to have a crack to get some much-needed match play in, and the experience of playing against all standards of players. We will also be providing a sausage sizzle on both days for those entered to play in this tournament. The winner will have their name recorded as the Champion which will see them as a part of a select few who have been able to win this tournament. And the trophy and prizes too.

Junior Championships

This year we are holding a junior tournament for Years 5 and 6 students.

Singles will be held on Monday 11 September 3:30pm-7.30pm.
