Year 3

The year 3 students have had a fantastic start to Term 3. Here is what we have been up to so far this term.

Maths:

In our Number and Algebra unit we have been learning about fractions. We have learnt that a fraction is part of a whole and looking at the numerator and denominator. In our Measurement and Geometry unit we have been learning about 2D shapes and looking at symmetry. We have been looking at how many corners and sides different shapes have. Did you know what all 4 sides shapes are called quadrilaterals?

Reading/Writing:

At the beginning of term 3, students have been immersed in their new unit called,

‘Author Study’ and have been exploring Graeme Base and his craft. They have created a biography about this popular children’s author and illustrator and are beginning to learn his ‘trademarks’ that make him so unique and apply it in their writing. We are also reading various Graeme Base books and using a variety of comprehension strategies to predict, infer and summarise. Feel free to ask your child to share all the interesting facts they know about Graeme!

Science:

This term we are exploring how materials change state when heated is added or removed. We started by looking at the difference between solids and liquids and how objects can go between a solid and liquid by melting or freezing. The students did an experiment and recorded what chocolate looked and felt like before and after melting it using warm water and/or hot water bottles.

Thank you!

The Year 3 Team! 😊

Year 4

In Literacy, students have been researching Margaret Wild and reading her books. They have been studying the authors craft in preparation to create their own picture story book. After reading Chalk Boy, students discussed the themes that appeared throughout the story. They then had a great time in the sun creating their own images to display their themes.

In Maths, they have been working with fractions and begun measuring using metric units.

Students are enjoying the Humanities unit, as they discover what makes things move through the exploration of forces and functions.

Year 5

On Monday 17th of July, the Year 5’s went to the Melbourne Zoo as a part of our science unit on Animal Adaptations. We learnt about different adaptations animals have and how that helps them to survive in the wild. We also learnt how some animals evolve so that they can survive in changing environments. We got to examine skulls from different animals and look at their differences and similarities. We watched as the zookeeper threw a bag of food to the Meerkats and discussed how they used their claws to get the food.

After our lesson, we got to explore the zoo and look at all the different animals. We got to see giraffes, monkeys, gorillas, elephants, lions and tigers. We explored the reptile exhibit and went into the butterfly house. We spoke about how different animals live in different habitats and climates. It was a really fun day!

Year 6

The grade 6 students have settled comfortably back into term 3 and are straight into the swing of things! It was nice to hear about all the exciting things that our students got up to over the holiday period.

In Literacy, We have started our Author Study unit. The year 6’s are learning about the Author, Morris Gleitzman. In reading, we are currently in the middle of reading his book ‘Once’. The students are thoroughly enjoying learning about historical fiction, focusing on the history of World War II. For writing, we have been experimenting with a range of figurative language and how this can add more depth and detail into our work to make it more descriptive and engaging.

In Maths, we have just concluded our unit on the four operations. Students are now being exposed to financial maths, focusing on percentages and decimals. Students will also be exploring Area and Length throughout this term, which they are very excited about.

For Humanities, Students have been understanding the impact of natural disasters outside of human control and how this can cause a variety of negative impacts for local communities.

In Science, The year 6’s have started their chemical science unit, delving into states of matter and the processes used to change these states. For Health, We have started out Nutrition unit. Students have explored types of natural and added sugar in a range of foods.

Term 3 is going to be a great one, with lots of exciting events happening throughout. Book week, the colour run and interschool sports!
