Student Work - Slam Poetry

TODAY

Sitting in the sun

Looking for inspiration

It's not coming

I am stunted

Because I've got writer's block

This is so hard

I don’t like poetry

I want to go home

This sucks

I hate writing poetry

Why can’t we stop

Let's do something fun

Leary, please make us stop

My head is pounding at the thought of poetry

Eyes aching

Tears welling

Just kidding

I love poetry

It’s the best

Makes today great!

Why is it that I stand up here with a page full of words yet nothing to say?

Why do you judge me as I find the courage to use my voice?

Why is it you criticise my thoughts and question my opinions?

Why do you whisper as I speak and laugh as I don’t?

Why is my heart racing?

Why are my cheeks flushed?

Why is it my hands won’t stop trembling?

Why is something so simple so hard?

Maybe it's me?

Maybe I'm the problem?

Maybe it's my lack of courage?

Or my inability to be brave?

But maybe it's you the audience?

Your judgmental glares and hateful stares?

Or is it society?

For it has raised us to judge and criticise others as they simply try to speak.

Break up Letter → Drink bottle → Shoes

I thought you would fill me up

instead, you leave me dry.

I let you walk all over me,

I could never get a grip

Carrying around the weight of my problems,

You made me bottle them up.

I thought we were a pair

But to you, I’m just there.

We kicked off on the wrong foot,

I could never keep up,

Connected for so long,

Now we're just untied,

I thought you’d fill me up,

Instead, you left me empty.

I want to be a rockstar

I want the world to know my name

I want your heart to pound when you hear my song

I want to be known for my fame

I want you to sing along

I want to sing live

I want the world to stop when you watch me

I want us to thrive

I want you and me to be free

I want to be a rockstar!
