Science Talent Search

All our students have submitted their entries into the Science Talent Search for 2023. As mentioned in a previous newsletter article the theme for this year is ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries’.

The students this year who are participating in the event are: Aditya Patel (Year 7), Austin Voges (Year 8), Param Dave (Year 10), Arun Sivaraman Rajalakshmi (Year 10) and Sai Pranav  Bollapragada (Year 10).

Pranav entered the ‘Creative writing’ competition on the topic: The role of the eDNA scientist and his composition was called: 'The Slice of Life/ Preserving Ecosystems'. It outlined how an eDNA scientist could protect us from invasive species. Aditya, Austin, Param and Arun all submitted a poster. Aditya’s poster was on the Cyber knife and its uses in surgery. Austin, Param and Arun (they entered as a group) developed their posters separately about the ‘Da Vinci Robot’.

They all attended MLC on Saturday 5th August to present their poster and explain the scientific concepts they had learnt on the topic. The results for the competition will be released early October. I would like to wish Aditya, Austin, Param, Arun and Pranav the best of luck with the competition.

 Meet the Scientist

For anyone interested in a career in research science, a chat with meteorologist, Dr Beth Ebert, about the many opportunities that a career in research science can open to you.

Glen Eira College was very fortunate to have meteorologist, Dr Beth Ebert meet and speak with students about the many opportunities that a career in research science can open to you. Dr Ebert is a Senior Principal Research Scientist and the Head of Forecast Quality Research at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Last year she was honoured as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Her work has taken her to every continent but Antarctica. It has given her opportunities to collaborate with botanists, medical scientists, the aviation industry, emergency management services and social scientists. She also enjoys mentoring young scientists.

We would like to extend our warmest thank you to Dr Ebert for volunteering her time to mentor and speak with our students and David Ebert for organising Dr Ebert to speak at Glen Eira College.
