eSmart Focus – Passwords
This week our eSmart focus is one for the parents and guardians. Although it is something that our students can be mindful of, it is more relevant for those of us with many electronic passwords. Our focus this week is:
“Commit to changing at least one password on an online account that you know you have shared with a friend”
Are you using a secure password or is your password one of 2017’s worst passwords? According to a company called Splash Data, below are the top 10 worst passwords of 2017.
- 123456
- password
- 12345678
- qwerty
- 12345
- 1234556789
- letmein
- 1234567
- football
- admin
If you are using one of these, then now is probably a great time to change it to something a little more secure. When coming up with a new password, here are a couple of tips from Microsoft.
Make sure your password:
- Is at least eight characters long
- Doesn't contain your user name, real name, or company name
- Doesn't contain a complete word
- Is significantly different from previous passwords
- Contains uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
A suggested method for coming up with a new password is to use a reminder sentence. Think of a sentence like “Today is Valentines Day and I received twelve red roses”. Using the first letter of each word gives you “TiVDaIrtrr”, now change the and into a symbol and twelve into a number and you get “TiVD+Ir12RR”
App Review
Book creator is an app which is used extensively in classrooms at Buninyong Primary School. It is a simple way to create eBooks which can be shared with friends and teachers.
Students can create eBooks by inserting images, text and drawings into their books. The interface is simple and intuitive and students learn how to use it quickly. It has a range of backgrounds and images that can be used or students can create their own and use their own photos.
Once books are created, they can be shared via iBooks, airdrop or email. No doubt many parents have been lucky to have their students present a portfolio at three-way conversations which most likely would have been created in Book Creator.
