Jeans for Genes Day
Last Friday was Jeans for Genes Day and our school participated to raise awareness and funds to support research into children’s genetic diseases.
It was great to see so many kids in their jeans on the day and the discussions that were being held around the school that linked to empathy, optimism and perseverance.
Together, we raised a total of:
$842
A special thanks to our VOTS kids who helped collect the money that was raised and our office staff who went to that extra effort to sell special goodies on the day. We will now be sending a cheque off to the Jeans for Genes Foundation.
Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved!
Teaching children to regulate their emotions.
Teaching children how to regulate their emotions is probably one of the hardest tasks as a parent. It has the challenges of noticing that a child is too connected to an emotion (or not connected enough). What we do know about emotional regulation is that we need to control the emotion and not the other way around. For those that are interested, there is a great (easy-to-read) resource on emotional regulation (linked below) for your reference.

As a school, we are taking a close look at this area and working on whole school approaches to help students identify their body signals and to utilise various strategies to support them to remain in a calm and positive state. One of the resources we are looking into is the Zones of Regulation (Seen below). Stay tuned for some more updates on this progress.
Lunch Time Clubs
Lunch Time Clubs are in full swing, providing our students with the opportunity to engage in structured activities during the lunch break. We generally see about 40-60 children attending on a daily basis (which is great) and they engage with staff and other students to build friendships, develop social play skills and generally have a bit of fun. If your child is interested, they can come along to the BER (New Building) on Monday to Thursday at lunch time. Activities offered include:
- Monday – Lego Time
- Tuesday -
- Wednesday – Tech and ICT
- Thursday – Games, Craft and Drawing
Another great opportunity regarding Lunch Time Clubs is that our VOTS students are currently working to find out what other activities students would like to be run. From there, the kids will vote and we will spend some of the allocated funds to support the development or replacement of a new session.
Expectation focus of the fortnight
This week we are focusing on the expectation of:
This links in with our current B+ Theme, ‘Responding to Bullying’, where we are asking to students to make sure that they take notice of others and work together to support each other in the yard and in class.
PLP Meeting Reminder
A reminder to all of our PLPs that there is a meeting scheduled for this Friday the 10th of August at 2:30pm. If you are unable to make the meeting, we ask that you please organise another representative to share your class’ views. We look forward to seeing you there!
Families with Preps in 2019 with additional needs
Families who have new prep students coming to school in 2019 and have been identified as having additional needs (e.g. Speech therapy, paediatric investigation, Autism, significant medical condition, etc), are encouraged to make a time to talk to Scott to discuss.
Scott will be able to help those families in understanding the Department of Education’s support framework and provide information on how our school and support the transition into Prep and also any additional resourcing that we may have access to.
To arrange a meeting with Scott, please call the office to book in a time.
