Year 3

What has been going on in Grade 3 😉 from a student’s lens.

This term has been great and super busy. What I have liked the most is Writing. I have liked been able to use our imagination and play around with our ideas. We just finished an activity that required us to work in groups and create…

  • 10 main Characters
  • 10 villains
  • 10 settings
  • 10 problems that a main character could face
  • 10 sidekicks

We had so much fun brainstorming and being creative!

This term in Writing, we have been learning about persuasive techniques we can use when writing. We completed a writing piece which was to either ‘BAN HOMEWORK’ or ‘HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT’. We then had to choose which opinion we agreed with, which then led to us writing a short essay to convince our readers to agree with our opinion. We have just start exploring the world of ‘narratives’ and how we can take our ideas and be really created to help write a story.

Words from the Grade 3 Teachers 😊

Well done to all the Grade 3 students who have worked incredibly hard this term. They all demonstrated ‘resilience’ over the NAPLAN testing period and worked incredibly hard and tackled each day with confidence. They have show maturity and a willingness to try new things which is evident in their work.

Well done Grade 3s on what has been a busy, bumpy and a roller coaster of a ride but a run one.

BRING ON TERM 2!!!

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

In Literacy, students have begun their Narrative unit. They have been reading and writing interesting starts and examining the emotive language and techniques authors use to engage their readers.

In Maths, students have begun telling time and problem-solving using time. They have made their own clock to assist with telling the time and finding time elapsed.

Wrapping up our Humanities unit, students are beginning to plan a speech to present to the class outlining why rules or principles are important and how they would persuade members of the communities to change their behaviour to make it a better place to live.

During Health students have explored health messages in the media. They have enjoyed discussing the ways people are influenced to make choices.

Year 5

What a busy term it has been! The year 5’s have been working really hard and learning lots.

In English, we wrote several persuasive pieces where we had to convince our audience using different persuasive devices, such as emotive language or exaggeration. We have just started our new unit on Narratives, where we will be writing lots of different short stories. We will also be doing an author study on Morris Glitzeman and reading his book ‘Boy Overboard’.

In maths we did lots of work around place value, addition and subtraction and used the vertical algorithm to solve problems. We are now moving onto fractions and angles. We will be using a protractor to measure the different types of angles and comparing and ordering fractions.

In Humanities we have been busy being ‘Change Makers’ and learning about different social justice issue. We are working in small groups to create a BTN style clip that we will share with our classes. In Science, we are investigating solids, liquids and gases and made Ooblek so we could investigate what a non-Newtonian solution is.

Year 6

Hello Brooksiders, my name is Alex and I am from 6C! I know it’s the end of term and we are all burnt out and just waiting for the clock to hit 3:15 on the last day of term, so my article will be brief. I think it has been a hard term for you year sixes considering that it’s our last year of primary school!

In reading, we have been learning about different opinions to topics such as vapes, over sharing online (parents posting photos of you without permission) and Australia day. These are controversial topics so it’s good we understand the different sides to these issues. We have also learned about different ways to answer questions using different strategies, one of the ways we can summarise for example is using the somebody, wanted, but, so, then. We have just begun our new novel to study called The Magician’s Elephant.

In writing we have aced our persuasive units (in my opinion!) by writing to convince an audience about our opinions on topics close to our hearts. I wrote about the importance of eating vegetarian, hit me up if you’d like to be convinced! My teacher said I did a great job 😉 This persuasive unit has helped us with our Humanities project called ‘Change Makers’ where we are making a change to important social justice issues. I’m sure the grade 5/6 families at home have heard all about our passion projects! Now, we are learning about narratives and ensuring our stories are effective in entertaining the reader.

In maths, we have been exploring the wonderous world of fractions which was super fun! I learnt so much, and it was really fun! We have also started learning about angles and where we can find them in the real world. I’m looking forward to extending my knowledge by looking at unknown angles and the angles that make up different 2D shapes.

In food tech, we have been learning about ways to stay save in the kitchen such as no running or being silly around the equipment. In grade 6 we have been mainly focusing on stove safety. This has tied in really well with our health unit as we have been learning about safety too. I thought I would add that the food we’ve been cooking up is awesome, my favourite is the pasta!

Finally, in music we have learnt about chords, and we have played fun games of guess the song based on the emojis which is super fun! The main instrument we have been playing is piano and a little guitar.

Unbuckle your seatbelts and plug into whatever charges you up ready for term 2! Thank you, teachers, for this amazing term and I hope to see you all soon! Bye!
