PREP

Wow! We can’t believe the first term has nearly come to an end. All the teachers are very proud and congratulate all the preps on their hard work. They have enjoyed many activities so far, but Play Based Learning has been a stand out favourite.

Students have been learning about positive ways to play with each other, exploring members of their family and personal strengths. Some activities have been dress ups, cotton bud painting, board games, puzzles, Lego and puppets.

We wish everyone a safe holiday and we can’t wait to see what exciting things Term 2 will bring.

Year 1

The Grade One teachers have been very pleased with how well the students have been working and know that all students will be looking forward to the holidays soon.

During writing, we have been learning how to write recounts. We have participated in a range of different experiences such as chalk drawing, created playdough sea creatures, made a beautiful swan and learnt how to draw frogs, minions and pandas. The following day students wrote recounts about the experience. We have enjoyed writing about our experiences and understood that it is important to include; Who? When? Where? What? Why?

Rebecca from 1C planned her writing after participating in a chalk drawing activity outside. She was able to identify the keys elements needed in a recount including: Who? What? When? Where? Why?

Danica from 1C learnt how to draw a panda in an experience and the following day was able to write a recount about what happened.

We even learnt how to make a playdough octopus and then wrote a recount the following day.

In Science we have been looking at different materials and physical changes that can be made. We have been looking at all the different ways we can change paper and plasticine. When exploring changes that can be made to paper we discovered that it can be folded, scrunched, cut and rolled.

During play-based learning we have continued to explore families. We have explored family celebrations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, family and connection to country.

Students from 1C listened to stories being told by the storyteller Izaak.

Ryan, Justin and Jason became artists and explored the book Remembering Lionsville by Brownyn Bancroft a Bundjalung Woman and Artist. They looked at what life was like growing up in country New South Wales.

Kai created dance moves for the song My Island Home by Christine Anu.

In maths we’ve spent a lot of time understanding that 10 ones make 1 ten. We were able to use a range of manipulatives to put this into action. We put 10 counters in a patty pan to make 1 ten, put 10 stickers on an icy-pole stick to make 1 ten, put 10 blocks together to make 1 ten, put 10 squares on a tens frame to make 1 ten, put 10 icy-pole sticks in a bundle to make 1 ten.

The Year 1 Teachers

Year 2

As we near the end of our first term as year 2’s, we can see a lot of routines are being paved within our classrooms and we are starting to flow comfortably.

This term in reading we continue with comprehension and have been delving into persuasive texts. Students are learning the difference between facts and opinions and the techniques used in persuasive writing/texts. We have also been looking at tricky words like SOMETHING, ASK, WHAT, REALLY, ANIMAL, ASK and BECAUSE. In addition to our tricky words, we continue to recap on our vowels sounds for spelling.

Please continue to read to your child at home as well as listening to them read for a minimum of 5 times per week as this supports your child’s literacy learning.

During our Grammar lessons we have been continuing with identifying nouns and learning about noun groups. Starting with two-word noun groups and working our way to a four-word noun group. Students are working on recognising nouns and their noun groups in sentences.

In writing, we are continuing with recounts. Students are practising to write about things that have already happened as we encourage students to think back further than their weekend. Some stories we have thought about a time students have lost a tooth, a big party that they have attended or even a day where they thought it was the best day ever. During our writing experiences students are encouraged to refer to their individual writing goals that remind students about punctuation – capital letters and sentence stoppers, making stories interesting by using interesting detail and finger spaces.

In Numeracy, Year 2 have been continuing with Place Value and they have been introduced to number lines up to 10’s, 100’s and 1000’s. Students have also begun learning about some maths symbols such as greater than and less than. They have begun to compare numbers as well as identifying which numbers are greater than or less than the other. We have also begun to look at 2-dimensional shapes and 3-dimentsional shapes, using our school, classroom and different items in our daily lives as resources to identify different shapes and their name labels. Students are learning mathematical language such as vertices (corners), edges, faces, sides, 2D and 3D.

In Humanities we are looking at different cultural celebrations and documenting whether we have experienced any other cultures before as well as different history concepts. Some history concepts include exploring indigenous inventions and then creating and designing our own inventions to make our lives easier. In Health they continue to look at balanced choices such as getting enough sleep, eating a rainbow diet of vegetables (meaning it includes all different coloured vegetables).

In Science we near the end of exploring the water cycle, learning new language to do with The Water Cycle such as Collection, Evaporation, Condensation and Precipitation. Students are still learning the meaning of these words and how it applies to the water cycle but are progressing well. Overall the year 2’s have been busy and enjoying their time at school.
