Team Foundation News

Week 6 - A full week of special presentations!

Not only was Week 6 the first full week of school for our Foundation students, it was also a busy week of guest speakers!

On Monday 6th of March, Mrs Coombs, who is in charge of First Aid at BPPS, came to speak to the students about First Aid kits. She talked about what you might find inside a First Aid kit and how each item can help us. At the end of this week the Foundation students will be making their very own First Aid Kits out of paper and will need to explain how each item in their kit helps us if we are ever hurt.

On Tuesday 7th of March, team Foundation had a visit from a member from Responsible Pet Ownership Victoria. Annette and her dog Jackie, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, came to teach the students how to be safe around pets. Annette taught us many important things such as:

  • How we can keep our pets safe by putting named collars around their necks, inserting microchips into the bodies of your pet and registering them with your local council
  • How to keep safe if an angry dog runs up to you on the street
  • When to never touch a dog, and
  • How to ask an owner to pat their dog and the safest way to approach a dog

On Wednesday 8th of March, Foundation children were visited by firefighters from the Balwyn Fire Station as part of the Fire Ed for Foundation Program. This program is designed for children in their first year of school. This is the age at which most children become able to effectively learn and utilise fire safety information when presented within a formal program. The children were so excited to meet the firefighters and were fully engaged in this education session.

During our first session with the firefighters, children explored:

  • Good and bad fires
  • The importance of adult supervision around fire
  • What to do in a fire: “Crawl down low and go, go, go!”
  • The importance and role of smoke alarms in houses
  • When to call 000
  • The various equipment firefighters need to do their job safely

After our first session, children were assigned a home learning task. This task was to decide on a safe place to meet their family and the firefighters in the event of a fire in their home. Children were asked to draw their home, their Safe Meeting Place and the people they lived with on a worksheet and return it to school ready to share with their peers.

In two weeks time the Foundation students will have a second visit from the Fire Fighters. During this session the students will:

  • share and explain their safe meeting place
  • share where smoke alarms are located in their house
  • discuss what to do if they were to catch on fire: “Stop, drop, cover and roll!”

Finally, it will be time for the most exciting part of the Fire Ed Program…a chance to check out the fire truck, spray the fire hose and listen to the siren!

The students have had so many wonderful experiences this week which have assisted them to learn ways that they can be safe in their community. Next week we are looking forward to having local Police Officers visit our school. We can’t wait to learn more from these community helpers and find out how they keep us safe in our community.
