COHR Library - "A child who READS will be an adult that THINKS!"

LIBRARY - Term 1 2023

PREPS:

This term the Preps have been introduced to our beautiful Library space. Each week they have a story read, complete a book response connected with the story and the best part is they borrow a couple of books to take home and read with their families.

We have been reading books from the authors - Aura Parker and Pamela Allen.  The students have been identifying different parts of a book as well as exploring these authors characters and writing and illustrating styles.

1\2:

Our 1\2's continue to enjoy the books on offer in our Library.  Borrowing time is exciting as they get to choose up to 3 books to borrow at this stage.

We have thoroughly been enjoying the many wonderful books of Alison Lester.  We have discovered that she lives on a farm overlooking the sea and that her characters are some of the animals that she has on her farm.  These characters, we have explored their traits, compared them and made connections to us.  In her writing we have looked at the way she uses rhyming or action words to describe these characters, settings or events.

3\4:

Anh Do is a well known and a much loved author with many of our students, not just our 3\4's.  We have looked at many of his books, both picture and chapter books.  We have focused on how authors make stories exciting by using memorable characters, humour, descriptive language, different fonts or lay out, to name a few.

Our 3\4's have written letters to Anh Do and shared their own 'mixed up animal' drawings, just like in his Weirdo series.  Hopefully we will get a reply.

Students are enjoying the many chapter books on offer as well as continuing to choose picture books and venturing into some non-fiction - information books on topics that interest them.

5\6:

We began the term revisiting our responsibilities of being a digital user at COHR.  Students are aware of how/when/why they should use our chrome books in all classes and if bad choices are made as in trying to access games or websites when they shouldn't be, that there will be some consequences.

Our 5\6's have chosen their own author to research.  Finding information about the author on given websites has helped reinforced research skills, thinking about key words whilst searching for information as well as working on beginning bibliographies, keeping notes of websites visited.  Students are emailing their author to ask further questions or wonderings.  This has allowed for discussions and modelling on Email etiquette, what to include and how to send an email.

New books that we receive through our monthly subscription box have been shared or promoted to the students to borrow.  Students borrow weekly or fortnightly depending on the type of books they borrow.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge has officially begun in March.  COHR participates in this  every two years.  All students have been registered and will be given their log in details over the next few weeks.

The Challenge encourages all students across Victoria to read and record their books and strive to reach the designated amount depending on what year level they are in.  The PRC goes until September. Prep - 2 students need to read / listen to 30 books and 3 - 6 students need to read 15 books.

Our 3 - 6 students have been encouraged to record their books they have read since the beginning of Term 1 so they will be able to add those books. Our P - 2 students can start to keep records of books they are reading from now on and they can add any books they have read in Term 1 as well.  Books that are read in the Library and in class will be added to their accounts as well. For now, just keep reading and writing down the books that have been read.

Premier's Reading Challenge website / student log in link.     Please click on the VPRC  login box then add student username and passcode.  These are generated by the challenge set up process.  Students will have time in Library lessons during Term 2 & 3 to log in and add books.
