Harmony Day & RCH Appeal for Sam
Harmony Day celebrations were led by MacLellan House via an online celebration, hosted by our house leaders Tia and Jono. Our provocation for the morning activity was based on a book called 'Room on Our Rock' by Kate & Joel Temple. It is a clever picture book with one story that can be read two different ways. Why don't you ask your child about what they remember? Here's what some of our students had to say;
"I liked the music and song and book about the seals. They sat on the rock and said 'Go away'. At the end the seals said, 'there's room on the rock now'. It made me happy." Nikita (year 1)
"I liked the book because I feel when it read the right way it didn't have a good meaning but when it went backwards it had a great meaning -that we could be like the seals and share our land and space." - Alexia (year 3)
"It was fascinating that the writer had made sentences that could be read the other way to change the story to share a space together. On my seal, I drew the Phillipens flag with red, white and blue with yellow stars." - Kent (year 4)
"The book described a rude perspective and a nice perspective. It was readable backwards which was clever because so many other books don't do that. The message was to be kind, respectful and to remind us how other people feel when included or excluded. If we want to follow in Jesus' footsteps we need to act with dignity towards others."- Mark (year 5)
Students were then invited to represent their culture/faith/language on a picture of a seal from the story which they added to our mural in the office area. Please pop into the school foyer to be see our own 'Welcome rock' where everyone is warmly welcome to our community.
Our fund raising for Samuel Thomas Nye also took place on this day. $352 will be forwarded to The Melbourne Royal Children's hospital as part of the Good Friday Appeal. Thank you to our community who donated in Sam's memory.
