Secondary School Nurse Health News

With the Easter School Holidays coming up, many of us are looking forward to taking a break, packing up the camper trailer and hitting the great outdoors.

Mosquito borne viruses such as Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) have been detected in our region. While infections caused by MVE is rare, it can cause a potentially serious infection of the brain. At this stage there is no vaccine for MVE but one is available for JE.

  • Avoiding mosquito bites is the most important way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases.

KEY POINTS:

  • Cover up. Wear long, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
  • Use insect repellants that contain picaridin or DEET
  • Don’t go out if you see lots of mosquitos outside, especially at dusk or dawn
  • Sleep under a mosquito net
  • Where there is stagnant water, avoid the area and stay inside if possible
  • Around the house, empty out areas that are holding water such as buckets, pots and old tyres
