Study Support program

Study Support is off to a fantastic start!

This year, in a Swinburne first, all of the period 3-4 Study Sessions are led by fully qualified Swinburne teachers, who remain on-site with the students for the entire double period. This means that students can access support at their point of need. Students can ask for help with anything from developing study planner, to problem-solving (eg. coming up with strategies to overcome difficulties in the work), to subject-specific help. Many students will also find they benefit from support with executive functioning, including planning and prioritising tasks, initiating and changing tasks, and staying on-task.

Our wonderful Study Support teachers have backgrounds ranging from Maths and Science (Pamela and Grace), to English and Humanities (Desi, Chelsea, Anthea and Tricia), to Food Studies (Cath) and Visual Arts (Ben and Ariela). Having the same teacher each week gives the students an opportunity to build a relationship, so they feel more comfortable to seek support. It also ensures continuity, so that students have a regular, focussed space to work in.

While initially there were a few questions about being asked to do two hours of supervised study, students have now settled into a regular routine, and the atmosphere in the library and student common room during the study periods has become very special.

The program is funded by the Tutor Learning Initiative, a Victorian Government initiative to enhance student learning in the wake of the 2020-2021 disruptions to learning due to theCovid-19 pandemic. We also use this funding for in-class and individual support including in-class tutoring for the Year 11 and Year 12 Vocational Major numeracy classes.

As the new Learning Specialist for Learning Engagement and Enhancement, I am loving my role coordinating and supporting the Study Support team. They are all such talented, passionate, compassionate teachers, and I’m really proud to see so many students making such good use of the “held space” they provide.
