Pathways  News and Information

Term 1, 2023

It’s been a busy start to the year with all students in the senior levels getting into the rhythm of their new year level, the expectations, workload and really starting to think about their pathways through and beyond secondary school.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

The year 10 students have been working hard finding their Work Experience placements for next term.

Some workplaces students have found include Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Swinburne University Astrophysics, Australian Defence Force and ACMI.

Work Experience is the short-term placement of secondary school students in Year 10, with employers to provide insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located. It provides students with the valuable opportunity to develop employability skills and explore career options.

Year 10 students who are undertaking Work Experience must have the Work Experience Arrangement Form signed and returned to the Pathways office by 26th May for the 21 – 23 June Work Experience days.

If you are having trouble finding Work Experience, you may find it here:

YEAR 10 AND 11 INDIVIDUAL CAREER CONVERSATIONS (ICC)

All students (and parents) are welcome to the pathways office at any time to discuss pathways through and beyond school, additionally all Year 10 -12 students receive Individual Career Conversations once throughout the year.

This term the pathways team along with the Year 10 Coordinators/teachers completed the Year 10 ICC your child may have discussed these with you.

At year 10 level the ICC is getting the students to start thinking about their Year 11 and 12 pathways, what do they think it looks like and do they know which pathway they want to undertake, VCE or VM?

The college wants to make sure all students understand each pathway option available to them. This ensures they make the right choices about their senior school pathway and that sets them up for success throughout Years 11 and 12.

During our Year 10 ICC this term we found most of our students had a pretty clear understanding of what they wanted to achieve but needed clarification about how to get there.

During Term II Year 10 students will be researching Year 11 subjects before subject selection (2024) begins mid-June. All 2024 subjects for all year levels will be available on the college website from mid-May.

The pathways team along with the Year 11 team begin the Year 11 ICC’s Monday 1 May onwards, to discuss Year 11, Year 12 (2024) subjects as well as life post Year 12 and what subjects if any, are prerequisites to any courses they are thinking about applying for in 2024.

Year 12 ICC – Year 12 students also have formal ICC in Term III which is when the university and

TAFE applications open.

The pathways office and Year 12 team work closely with Year 12 students throughout the year with informal conversations and presentations, they also have priority in the Pathways office if they need additional information or conversations. The pathways office is located beside the Year 12 coordinators office and opposite the Year 12 study room.

Parents/guardians are also very welcome to the pathways office at any time to discuss options for your child.

UNIVERSITY OPEN DAYS

It is nearly Open Day season, a chance for students in any year level to experience university life on campus, discuss course options and requirements, meet with lecturers and student ambassadors and life on campus in general – Open Days have such a great vibe, everything open and accessible, music, food and fun.

Dromana College strongly recommends Year 12 students attend at least one Open Day.

Open Day dates will be announced on Compass bulletin and emailed to students (school email) and parents/guardians as we get notified.

VET ATTENDANCE

A majority of VET subjects are delivered offsite at other schools or Chisholm.

The pathways office gets notified by the school / TAFE if the student arrives late, leaves early or is absent.

The pathways office will notify parents/guardians if this is the case.

If your child needs to leave VET early for medical/family reason the parent/guardian will be contacted by the trainer or the pathways office for approval before your child is allowed to leave.

Both TAFE/school and Dromana College have a duty of care, even if the student is offsite.

VET Certificate courses are not like school subjects, if your child misses a session they cannot ‘catch up’ or ‘make up’ the missed class, too many missed sessions may result in non-completion of VET Certificate requirement for Vocational Major.

Completion of a VET Certificate is compulsory for Year 11 students undertaking the Vocational Major Certificate. If students do not complete the full school year of their chosen VET in Year 11, they may be required to enrol in the same or another VET in Year 12
