The Arts

Term 1, 2023

ARTS WEEK

We are excited to share with you the highlights of our recent annual Arts Week! This year's event was a grand success with an array of activities and performances that kept the Arts community engaged and entertained.

The week-long celebration included live music, soirées, drama performances, dance classes, photography workshops, art activities and competitions, face painting, pronoun badge making, dress-ups, BBQs and more. We were thrilled to have local artist and businesswoman Rondelle Douglas of Rondelle Designs host a watercolour workshop, which was very well attended by students. Students worked with still life arrangements and watercolour techniques to create masterpieces under the guidance of Rondelle.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Rondelle Douglas and our student leaders for their valuable contribution in making this year's event a memorable one. A special mention to our student leaders who helped in organizing the activities and manning the BBQ.

We also want to thank all the participants who submitted their entries for the Art & Illustration Competition. We received almost 200 responses, and the quality of artwork was exceptional, making the judging process incredibly difficult. Congratulations to all the winners of the competition! The Teacher's Choice was awarded to Camryn Small from 8LO, while the People's Choice went to Hatty Becker from 12WI. The Art Captains Senior Awards were given to Rianna Smith from 10YU and Lani Hauf from 10TU, and the Art Captains Junior Awards went to Rylee Yong from 9TH and Silas Barras from 7TH.

We are still collating the prizes and will ensure that they are delivered to the winners soon. We would also like to remind you that all the entries can still be viewed in our virtual gallery.

Finally, we are excited to announce that the Arts Domain will be hosting the semester one year 7-10 arts show on May 23rd, 2023. We look forward to inviting the community to witness the talent and creativity of our young artists.

TERM 1 MUSIC SOIRÉE

On Wednesday 29 March the Term 1 Music Soirée was held in the college library. There was a fantastic attendance of students, parents/guardians and staff who all came to support and watch the music performances. Students from years 7 to 12 all performed a range of musical pieces that covered a great diversity of genres as ensemble arrangements. The soiree welcomed many new faces with a great number of year 7 students performing in their first soirée at Dromana College.

The Music Captains Lacey Rigg and Emmet Thuan did a fantastic job helping coordinate and MC the evening. In addition all the performing students worked hard in the lead up to prepare for their performance with the expert guidance and support from their instrumental and classroom teachers.

The students who performed should be very proud of their performances and we are already looking forward to the Term 2 Soirée. Thank you to everyone who attended and has supported these students and the Music Department!

TOP CLASS

The VCAA Top Class series features students who received very high grades for their VCE performance examinations in 2022. Our VCE Dance, Drama and Music students were lucky enough to attend the Top Class concerts this year and were inspired by the variety and creativity of the performances.

We would like to congratulate our Dromana College 2022 graduates, Rani Thuan, Harvey Kyberd and Tom Selth who performed at the Top Class Music concert at Melbourne Recital Centre, as well as the opening night for VCAA’s Top Designs program at the Melbourne Museum last Friday night. We’d also like to congratulate our 2022 year 11 students Karis Richmond and Lachie Clue, who received excellent results in their Dance and Drama performance exams and were also invited to audition for Top Class.

We are so excited to be back officially running Wakakirri for 2023! This is a fun and exciting Dance story telling event. Wakakirri is creating a story through acting, dancing, movement, costumes, set and music over 7 minutes. Our dance captains; Karis and Charli, have created a story based on an ancient Greek mythology.

All students from year 7 to 12 are very welcome, and no dance experience is needed. We had a successful audition for the lead roles on Thursday 30th March, more members are welcome.

If interested either see or email:

Ms Taryn Sabell, Ms Sarah Mann or Ms Jennii Johnson.

Rehearsals will be Thursdays 3:15 – 4:30pm

(*However, if you have other commitments and need to leave a little earlier, email and I am sure we can accommodate). Please note that not all groups will be required every week, occasionally there will be lunchtime rehearsals as required.

NEW F BLOCK DANCE EXTENSION CLASS

We are excited to now be offering a new F Block Dance extension class this year. This unit runs each Wednesday afternoon, and focuses on students choreographic skills and technique development, whilst exploring dance in alternate spaces and the techniques required for dance film and editing.

We have performed and filmed at the Rye back beach early in March and at the Moorooduc Railway at the end of March. We’d like to thank volunteer from the Mornington Railway Preservation Society – Moorooduc Station, Mr Owen Paden for opening up the station for the afternoon for us.

Students thoroughly enjoyed both experiences and are looking forward to an incursion at the start of term 2 with professional dance videographer and experience much of his technological equipment while filming in the dance studio and around the school.

Students are working on film editing as they go, and hope to feature their dance film at the media cinema night and the final dance performance evening at the end of the year.

VCE DANCE TOP CLASS EXCURSION

On March the 7th we travelled by train to the city for our annual excursion to the VCE Dance Top Class concert. This concert showcases some of the top year 12 Dance students solo’s from the previous year. Both the VCE Dance classes and Dance extension class came along to enjoy this experience.

CHUNKY MOVE DANCE COMPANY – DANCE WORKSHOP

While in the city dance excursion on the 7th March, students also attended a fabulous dance workshop with the dance company “Chunky Move”. Students gained valuable experience and the privileged opportunity to learn some of the company’s choreography, in their very own studio with one of the company members.

HARRY POTTER – PERFORMING ARTS EXCURSION

On the 22nd of February, all year 9 and 10 Performing Arts students, including our Year 9 and 10 Dance classes and F Block extension, were privileged to travel to Melbourne to enjoy the fabulous professional production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. A show not only full of incredible effects and magic tricks, but wonderful acting, dance movement and music. This was a special experience that all students and teachers will remember.

ARTS WEEK  - DANCE 2023

We had yet another successful week celebrating everything “art” related in March this year.

A huge thank you to our dance captains; Karis and Charli for running a dance workshop class on the Wednesday lunchtime, and we had the theatre full for dance enthusiasts for the Just Dance on the Friday. Lots of fun!

UPCOMING PERFORMANCE EVENINGS

This year we have decided to divide up the dance performance evenings of the end of semester.

Our VCE Dance class will be performing Monday 15th May, in the theatre, at 6pm. They will be performing their skills solo’s and class Learnt Dances.

Our Junior Dance Performance evening will be Wednesday, 24th May, again in the theatre at 6pm. This will feature year 9 and year 10 Dance classes, small group dances and class Learnt Dance and Dance Club. Both evenings will showcase lots of hard work and talent. Everyone is welcome to both performance nights.
