Languages Faculty

Halo / Hola

Learning a foreign language is a great opportunity for children, but it can also be challenging for parents who do not speak the language. Nevertheless, parents can still play an important role in supporting their child's language learning journey. Encouragement and taking an interest in what they are learning a key ways for parents to support their child.

By being encouraging and showing an interest in your child’s Spanish or Indonesian language classes, parents can make a big contribution to their child’s success. To support your child's interest in learning Spanish and Indonesian, parents can do the following:

  1. Encourage your child to practise speaking Spanish or Indonesian at home.
  2. Take an interest in their homework and quiz them on vocabulary.
  3. Watch a film in Spanish or Indonesian.
  4. Try cooking an Indonesian dish or a meal from a Spanish-speaking country.
  5. Find out about Spanish or Indonesian events that are happening in Melbourne and if possible, take your children to them.

Research shows that parents play a crucial role in their child’s education, and supporting their language learning is a way parents can show how valuable language learning can be. By being encouraging and taking an interest in what children are learning, parents can help their child develop a love of language and a strong foundation for future success.
