Saints Students Shine at the Lions Youth of the Year Competition

Dyson Nelder and Darcy Oates participated in the annual Lions Youth of the Year competition last Saturday. The competition is around leadership and public speaking and every year our College Captain and Public Speaking Captain participate. The competition comprises of a lengthy application process, an interview with a panel of judges, a five-minute prepared speech and two impromptu speeches which require the student to speak about a topic for two minutes with no preparation.

Dyson spoke from the heart about resilience and his experiences being resilient in life, while challenging the audience to consider their own tools for success in this area. Darcy spoke in an authentic and articulate manner about the division in society and how core, common values are needed to maintain relationships. Both spoke exceptionally well, and their impromptu speeches were nothing short of impressive.

Congratulations to Darcy who was awarded Lions Youth of the Year. He now moves on to the next round of competition at the zone finals next weekend. Dyson and Darcy’s representation of St Augustine’s students as mature, empathetic and intelligent young leaders means our school was also a big winner for the night.
