Legal Studies Students Gain an Insight into Queensland Policing

Senior Constable Matt Henderson spoke to Year 11 Legal Studies students last Monday.  He has spent 14-plus years in the Queensland Police Service and has been attached to multiple units. The boys were attentive and appreciated the time he took to share his knowledge and experiences. His presentation focused on the legal knowledge of an officer of the law, his responsibilities and his experiences. Mr Henderson also focused on the process of arresting people with and without warrants and alcohol-fuelled violence legislation and enforcement.

Here are the thoughts of some of the students in the class:

I appreciated Matt from the Queensland Police Service coming into class due to the plethora of knowledge he gave us. We were able to understand the rights and responsibilities of the police force, and what they can and can't do on duty. Moreover, he explained to us that even police may be held to account for their actions – Thomas D.

I really appreciated Senior Constable Matt Henderson coming in to talk to the class about the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act (2000); talking to us about the different powers that police have that civilians do not – Joey C.

I didn't know police could not take out any of their weapons, including their handcuffs unless there is a valid reason prescribed under the law.  Otherwise, an officer can be prosecuted like any other person – Caleb G.
