MIC Report

Another busy two weeks of cricket has seen some wonderful success across the school.

First Grade won their first T20 Bonnor Cup game in over 5 years and have made the qualifying finals. The Wiburd Shield made an excellent start to the season with a resounding win against Shellharbour Anglican College, and Phoebe Litchfield and the Sydney Thunder won the WBBL against the Melbourne Stars.

There are several holiday fixtures for First and Second Grade over the holidays, including a one-off friendly against Shore School on January 20, which will be a great warm-up for the Douglas Shield in Term 1.

First XI Bonnor Cup T20 v Lithgow Lightening Round 2

One in a row!

The Kinross First XI, after having fallen agonisingly close in 3 of their first 4 matches for the year, have finally come away with a win. The side looked different to a week prior – coach Mr Prowse was not available, and wicketkeeper/batsman Dave Hunter was in the stands sporting a cast for a broken thumb. These 2 were replaced by marquee player James Larkin, and by young keeper James Glasson in his First Grade debut. The victory came against the Lithgow Lightning senior side in KWS’s second appearance in the Friday night Bonnor Cup 20/20 competition, where matches are played weekly under lights at Orange’s Wade Park. In their first Bonnor Cup appearance a few weeks ago KWS managed to pull defeat from the jaws of victory when an overthrow on the last ball of the match gifted CYMS an unlikely win; this time KWS were rewarded for a tremendous team effort that saw Lithgow finish 4 runs short of the victory target.

KWS Captain George Cumming continued his excellent work at the toss, winning and electing to bat. Openers Tom Kiss and Mac Webster were patient through the first few overs before Kiss nicked one on 11 and Larkin headed to the middle. Three balls and three sumptuous drives later Larkin was in double figures, only to hole out soon after to a short ball and depart for 14 runs. Important contributions followed from Charlie Tink (13), Luke Hunter (11 not out) and Dudley Shepherd (8 not out). Webster dug in, ran plenty of singles, and was dropped twice to finish on 44. After their 20 overs, a reasonable target (given the slow outfield) of 116 was set.

Captain Cumming opened the bowling with his accurate left arm orthodox spin, the team ecstatic when he removed Lithgow’s opener with his fifth delivery! He was happy to be overshadowed however when a few overs later the ball was tossed to Larkin – his 4 overs returned figures of 4 for 5! With that sort of start, Lithgow remained behind on the run race. As Lithgow showed signs of closing the gap important catches were taken by Tink and Kiss, and Webster enjoyed one over in particular where he picked up 2 wickets and threw a direct hit runout. Nelson Shepherd continued to impress with the ball, and Arnie Tancred was another bowler who contributed to the all-round effort. James Glasson had a fine game behind the stumps in his debut. Though wicketless on this occasion Jono Rasmussen is another one to watch with his genuine pace keeping opposition batters hopping. The teams fielding efforts were outstanding on a rough outfield, quite possibly the difference between the two teams.

In the final wash-up, it was KWS by 4 runs – and a very cheerful dressing room. It has been 5 years and 2 days since the last KWS team won a Bonnor Cup game.

1st XI v St Pats Old Boys Round 5

The KWS First XI took a trip to Bathurst for the second day of a two-day match. The first day being a wash out. Captain George Cumming won the toss, six in a row, and elected to bowl. Mac Webster and Cumming opened with Jono Rasmussen injured. Some tight bowling came from the openers and first change with Webster 2/48 off 8 (some late hitting impacted the figures), Cumming 1/70 off 19, Taylor, for his first match of the season 1/9 off 4.2 and Tancred, taking his opportunities, 2/35 off 6. Dudley and Nelson Shepherd chipped in with some quality overs too. Fielding once again stood out with minimal mis fields and no dropped catches topping off the quality two games of fielding, James Glasson’s keeping improving once again. St Pats declared at 6/207 off 44.2 overs.

KWS had 208 runs to win or 47 overs for a draw. Tom Kiss (11) and Webster (22) batted well getting us through some tight opening bowling spells, the draw looked on the cards. Luke Hunter (7), Dudley Shepherd (10) and Cumming (22) chewed up some balls for the team. Until Jono Rasmussen and Ed Taylor looked to keep out some high-quality bowling from experienced St Pats bowling in very tough conditions. Pats didn’t give up and took the tenth wicket with 14 balls left in the day with a good catch to first slip.

KWS efforts didn’t disappoint in a tough loss against a top three team.

2nd XI v CYMS Round 6

The day started again with a loss of the toss, zero from five for Captain Angus Blyde, and CYMS chose to bat first. Our opening bowler was Harry Priest who bowled extremely well with figures of 5 maidens, 3 wickets, 8 overs and for only 7 runs. Then we had Henry Forsyth and Charlie Condon who bowled 2 maidens each and got a collective of 3 wickets. Then it our young gun Jamie Anderson who bowled 4 overs, picked up 2 wickets for only 9 runs. Also great bowling efforts from Jock Stuart and Mr Stu Crisp. Our fielding was also awesome with 3 great catches from Hugh Thompson, Jamie Anderson and Angus Blyde. Also, a spectacular direct hit runout from Angus Staniforth. All of these efforts lead to CYMS getting all out on 75 runs. Now it was our time to bat with Harry and Hugh opening. Harry got a couple of quick boundary but then got caught. We then lost most of our wickets for not a lot of runs leaving us on 9 wickets for only 52 runs. This was a really tough ask for last batters Charlie and Jamie who needed 24 runs. They knuckled down and got the job done.  Kinross won the game, but it just got a bit too close in the end.

2nd XI v Orange City Round 7

KWS won the top of the table clash over City by 17 runs. After losing the toss, KWS opened the batting at Riawena on a hard deck. Mr Ronald (65) and Hugh Thompson (12) settled the innings before Thompson was trapped in front bringing Harry Priest (31) to the crease. The Ronald/Priest partnership wore down the City attack and allowed Mr Crisp (29no) and Angus Blyde (30no) to finish the job with KWS 5/183 after 40. For City’s innings, Thompson (2/21) started well removing Stedman, a big threat to the chase, with Charlie Condon (2/26) supporting well. Will Englund held the middle overs well with a tidy spell before Priest (4/29) cleaned up the tail to leave City short. A big result for the team, despite some ordinary fielding, gives KWS confidence moving into the holiday fixtures.

16 Scorchers v CYMS Gold Round 7

On a bright Saturday morning, KWS U16 Scorchers took on CYMS Gold. KWS batted first, and put on an amazing score of 212. Top contributions included 50’s by Liam McKenzie and Will Kerr. KWS then went out to bowl, and CYMS were bowled out for less than 40 runs, with Charlie Condon taking 4 wickets. A good win and great performance from the team.

13 Sixers v CYMS Gold Round 6

The Sixers pulled off their first win as an age group in two seasons, led by a superb performance from Ashton Nock well supported by the full team. Captain Zoe Wood won the toss and was convinced it was worth a bat. Sam Hughes (13) opened with Nock (29no) and the pair calmly built a platform after Nock retired in the 8th over. Fergus Strudwick kept the score ticking along with Finn Price and Charlie Keirle, before Nock re-entered to help finish off the innings at 84. In reply CYMS were looking solid as their captain held up an end and let the score tick over. Sam Martin was excellent behind the stumps as KWS looked to tighten the screws. Two excellent runouts from Hamish Slack-Smith and Keirle heaped the pressure on the middle-order as Price (3/8) and Nock (3/3) finished the job and dismissed CYMS 6 runs short of the target. Thank you to Mr McRae for scoring and Mrs Martin for the victory Zooper Doopers!

13 Sixers v Orange City Warriors Round 7

The Sixers won their match against Orange City on Saturday. After winning the toss and electing to bat Orange City were dismissed for 46.  This had a lot to do with the fast in-swinging deliveries of Ashton Nock who wrecked the Orange City top order by taking 5 for 2 from 3 overs. His first over saw him take 3 wickets. He picked up his fourth wicket in his next over before returning later in the innings for his third over where he collected his fifth wicket. All of his wickets were bowled – testament to the fact that he bowled fast, full and straight.

Mention should also be made of other members of the Sixers attack such as Sam Hughes, Zoe Wood, Charlie Keirle, James McRae and Hamish Slack Smith who kept the pressure on Orange City and did not allow their batsmen to recover. But it was Sam Martin who made sure that there was a no late innings rally by taking 2 wickets in one over to finish off the innings.

In reply the Sixers managed to pass the Orange City total after having lost 5 wickets. No one managed a big innings but there were valuable contributions from Fergus Strudwick, Hamish Slack Smith, Ashton Nock, Sam Hughes and Charlie Keirle and Zoe Wood to see the Sixers home.

Thanks to Tom Kiss for umpiring and Mrs Balcomb for her help with scoring.

Wiburd Shield Round 2 - KWS vs Shellharbour Anglican College

KWS won the toss and elected to bat first. Some tight bowling early on restricted runs and resulted in a couple of early wickets. Charlie Tink and Dudley Shepherd batted with good maturity and put together a 70 run partnership before Dudley was dismissed for a well made 31. Hugh Thompson and Charlie Tink then combined for an 84 run partnership with Hugh making 28 and offering good support to Charlie. Charlie managed to bring up his 100 in the last over of our innings leaving him not out on 103 and KWS with a formidable total of 4-209.

Charlie Condon and Hugh Thompson performed well with the ball bowling tight lines and picking up regular wickets. They were well supported in the field with a high standard maintained at all times. Hugh Thompson was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 5-12 off six overs. Charlie Condon and Andrew May also picked up 2 wickets each. Special mention to Dan Hunter with a superb catch behind the stumps to take the last wicket of the match.

Good luck to the Wiburd Shield team in their next game.

Water Polo

It has been a great term of Water Polo – and it doesn’t have to end just yet! If you would like to play this Thursday afternoon, you still can. We are going to try to play all our scheduled junior and intermediate games this week. If you can’t come because you are a boarder or have other commitments, that’s fine. But if you would like to play, please come to the town pool! You will be able to play multiple games of Water Polo – Hooray!!

We have had some great results over the past fortnight. Heading into the holidays, these teams are at or near the top of their respective division ladders:

  • Juniors – Hydra: 2nd
  • Intermediates – Barracudas: 1st
  • Seniors – KWS 1st: 4th

There may be some reshuffling of the competition over the holidays. COVID-19 restrictions in the lead-up to the season meant that separate spring and summer seasons were planned. If there are any major changes, I will communicate these to the players promptly.

The Year 11 players have recently voted for the Captain of Water Polo. This position will be announced at the start of next year and the Captain presented with his or her badge at an assembly.

Training will recommence in Week 2 of Term 1 next year.

Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy holiday. I hope you get the chance to muck around with a ball in a pool, lake or dam and play a bit of Water Polo!
