Assistant Principal - Curriculum

A very warm welcome to 2021 at McCarthy Catholic College. This year we are looking forward to working to ensure the best learning outcomes for all students. Under the leadership of Principal Rod Whelan, all teams will focus on ensuring meaningful learning in calm classrooms. Across the college ‘Living Well, Learning Well’ - the document shared last week by Mr. Whelan,  will underpin all aspects of the work done here. We look forward to sharing this with you.

We welcome Mrs Melissa Carr, Mrs Tracy Le Fevre and Ms Clara Wolds to the English faculty, and Mr Craig Drew and Mr Roger Torrington to the TAS faculty. Additionally we are pleased to welcome Mr Mitch Ebert and Mr Ethan Walden who have joined our ICT team. Collectively these new team members bring a mix of experience and enthusiasm to the McCarthy community and we look forward to working with them in 2021.

Congratulations to Mrs Angell Harris who received her formal accreditation as a Proficient Teacher from NESA in December last year.

As part of our process to ensure effective pedagogical practices, each year students in the college undertake several standardised assessments in literacy and numeracy. The first of these is Best Start for Year 7.

Best Start is an online literacy and numeracy assessment that assesses key literacy and numeracy skills of Year 7 students. It is just one of a range of assessments the college uses to assess students.

The tool is designed to assist teachers identify students who may require additional support in developing their literacy and numeracy skills.

Students will be asked to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a computer to enable them to hear audio during the assessment. Earbuds used for mobile phones or other portable devices may be suitable for use during the assessment. The type of computer connection needed is a jack or USB.

Please contact Mrs Lynette Maio if your child has additional learning needs requiring support to complete an online assessment.

Students in Years 7 - 10  will complete a progressive achievement test (PAT) in an online environment during Term 1. The resultant data will be used to inform the next best steps in learning.
