Naidoc Celebrations

Infants

The end of the year has come up very quickly and all classes are working hard to finish off their learning for 2020. An exciting buzz is also rippling through the building with the arrival of elf scouts and excitement about the end of year celebrations.

We will be having a mini Olympics and pool visit on the final day of term, please keep an eye out for permission notes and get them back to school as soon as possible. We are looking forward to our presentation assembly to celebrate the achievements of the children this year. It is going to be a busy last couple of weeks.

Semester 2 Reports will come out next week. If families have anything they would like to discuss with class teachers after reading reports please make an appointment through the front office.

2020 has been a different year, however just today I was talking to a colleague and saying although it has been different it has also been a great year for community and togetherness.

From the infants building, we wish everyone a safe and joyous Christmas and a very happy new year.

Primary

We've had an action-packed few weeks of school here in the Primary department.

Today all Year 3 - 6 students have been taking part in their special Incursion!

We started off the day getting into our teams: The Warriors, The Heroes, The Barbarians, The Gladiators and The Legends. Over the next two days they'll be battling it out through games, sports, activities and team-building exercises to determine which team are The Ultimate Champions! We've already had Touch Footy, Ultimate Frisbee, A Code Cracking Scavenger Hunt and our Wiradjuri Echoes workshop.

It'll be a lot of fun!

The Year 3-4 Boys Tackle Football team had a great day out last week and shared some great times with our St Joseph's Primary School friends.

Our behaviour focus has been: Follow Instructions. Being in Years 3-6 we know how to behave and act at school. It's so important that if we are given an instruction, we follow it immediately. This shows a good example to our younger friends.

Year 3/4/5

We have had a great few weeks in Year 3/4/5. Our learning adventure has been fun and exciting with lots of hands-on activities.

In maths, we started learning about 3D shapes. We have explored the many faces, edges and corners of shapes by building these shapes with different materials. First, we tried making them with marshmallows and paddle pop sticks but found the marshmallows (and our shapes) fell apart very quickly. So, in a second attempt, we went back to using jelly beans and toothpicks, which were much easier to work with. We might have secretly snuck a few jellybeans as special treats too! Shhh!!! We also explored the nets of these shapes and had fun cutting, gluing and folding the nets to make the shapes.

In English, we have been writing about what Christmas looks like in our houses, or what we imagine the best Christmas to look like. The aim was to 'paint a picture' in the reader's mind using lots of adjectives and interesting words. This writing has also got us into the spirit of in other areas of learning. In art, we have created 'stained glass' art to decorate our windows. We coloured Christmas pictures then coated them with coconut oil to make them look like stained glass. They look fantastic!

Year 5/6 Classroom

In our classroom, we have finished a unit of work on our role models, which we presented as speeches to our class. We all learnt so much from this about the importance of being a role model. We've been tackling new learning about mean, median, mode, range and probability in mathematics, which we have created a little rhyme to remember:

'Hey diddle diddle, the median's the middle

You add and divide for the mean

The mode is the one that appears the most

And the range is the difference in-between!'

We have been making good use of technology in our classroom, completing reading comprehension and mathematics activities on devices daily. We are also thoroughly enjoying having Year 11 students come down twice a week to read with us - we are all gaining a lot from the sessions.
