Mordialloc Student Voice Committee

Mordialloc College Student Voice Committee - 2020 Summary

While this year has provided its share of difficulties, the members of the Mordialloc College Student Voice Committee have worked diligently and with great effort, to improve not only the school's inner workings but the entire community. Students, teachers and parents have all benefited from the actions of the Student Voice Committee.

Team 1: Curriculum Sub-committee

As the Curriculum Sub-committee, our main achievement this year has been the holiday homework proposal, which changed how we operate at Mordialloc College. Added to our school’s Homework Policy, the holiday homework proposal (which can be accessed from our school website) has brought the following key changes:

Time Limits
Years 7-9Up to one hour per subject
Year 10Up to two hours per subject
Years 11-12No hard limit. Teachers will consider their students' wellbeing before setting tasks.

For Years 7 – 10, the one hour time limit (two hours for Year 10) does not include:

  • Overdue work
  • Catch-up work
  • Pure reading tasks (or listening/viewing tasks)

Additionally, Benchmark Tasks will not be given as holiday homework for Years 7-10, and for VCE, sufficient class time for SACs must be provided.

Team 2: Study skills

We, the Engagement Sub-committee, gave a survey to our Middle School and Year 10 students  during Mentor classes and received 204 responses. From those results we narrowed down on what we needed to target. Our targets were Organisation, Focus and Time Management. We reviewed these major targets and began to construct a range of PowerPoint slides - one of these was shown during Mentor. We have created more slides which will be utilised at the start of 2021. For 2021, we plan to focus more on both student wellbeing and parental involvement through the use of information nights during the year. We really want to engage with not only the school but the wider community.

Team 3: Facilities

As the Facilities Sub-committee, our main focus has been the auditing and improvement of the school chairs, road safety for school students and the development of a more environmentally friendly rubbish disposal system. With chairs being our main focus over the course of this year, we first discussed the possible chair types, followed by an audit to confirm the total number of chairs that were broken, and could be repaired. In the coming weeks, work will be done to place orders on chair stoppers to ensure all chairs are in full working order. In 2021, our Facilities Sub-committee will aim to build on the efforts of 2020, and improve the school’s rubbish collection systems, as well as improving the safety of crossings surrounding the school, and ensure student safety to and from school.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the school community a safe and happy holiday break.
