Environment and Sustainability Team

Hi, we are your new environment leaders. Our names are Patrick, Marco, Cohen and Basti.

We are very excited and we are looking forward to working around the school in different areas. We are very excited to work with the gardening club and anyone is welcome to join and come on any Thursday at afternoon break that suits you. We will be feeding the worms weekly on most Mondays at morning break if you are interested. We are hoping to improve St Johns in lots of environmental and sustainable ways. We hope you will all support us.

Clean Up Australia day is an annual event held on the first Sunday in March in various locations across Australia. The event is to bring awareness of the amount of rubbish that is discarded onto the ground that could be recycled or placed in landfill. The clean up helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our waterways.

At St John’s this year the Environmental Team has registered to be one of 2000 schools to participate in the Clean Up Australia on Friday 28th February. We are participating in this activity to make everyone aware of the amount of rubbish around our school and whether any of the rubbish could be recycled so it doesn’t all go into landfill.

We are also making you aware that the rubbish that is left lying around our school grounds gets washed down storm water drains and ends up in our creeks, rivers or oceans.

Right now there is over 6 million tonnes of rubbish in our ocean. This is having an impact on the lives of sea birds, fish, seals, turtles, whales and other marine animals.

We are looking forward to everyone's participation in this event to make our school a cleaner and greener environment for all of us to enjoy.
