Term 2 Week 3

Home Learning

English

This week students will focus on the structure of  Persuasive texts and how to sequence and order the different parts of the  text.  We are learning how to strengthen arguments and opinions by using modal verbs which have a high impact on the reader/listener. Then we will find out how Oreo biscuits are educational and help us to plan our paragraphs for persuasive writing. Using the acronym; OREO the students can plan and write a paragraph including opinion, reasons and examples.

This week we continue to use Picture Story Books as our focus for literature. This week our book,  'Gallipoli' explores the themes of bravery, hardship, humour, fear and above all, mateship.

Saturday 25th April was ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand. On 25th April 1915 (105 years ago) members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) stormed on to the beach at Gallipoli, Turkey in an attempt to capture the land for the British army. To develop the reading comprehension strategies of thinking about the text, thinking within the text and thinking beyond the text  the students will work through optional literacy activities in 'Gallipoli Literacy Menu'. Students are familiar with this format as they worked on literacy menus in term one in class.

This week students are encouraged to keep practicing their automatic recall of the 'codes' (sounds patterns) by referring to the flashcard videos and saying them with the teacher.  We are also introducing a new rule - the letter 'c' will say its second sound /sss/ when it is immediately followed by an e, i or y. For example, in the words 'cent', 'city' or 'cycle'.  Students are encouraged to find other words following this rule and find 'rule breakers'.

All students should have received their login details for our new online book library, 'Epic'. At this stage, we are providing students free choice over the books available. Some books do have the capability of being audio-books, but always encourage your child to follow on with the words if they choose this feature.

Mathematics

This week we are beginning to focus on addition in the Number and Algebra component of Mathematics.  We are looking at mental strategies such as, pairs of ten, adding and subtracting ten, doubles and near doubles.  These strategies will assist the students when completing harder sums in the coming weeks.

In the Measurement and Geometry component we will explore and review time. Specifically we will examine reading time to the hour and half hour and then compare analogue and digital times. Children will view video clips and complete a quiz to review their knowledge and understanding of  time.

Unit of Inquiry

This week students will be in the 'Finding Out' stage of the inquiry. We will understand the  difference between a rule and law and the responsibility we have as members of our community to follow laws.  This will involve students designing a poster to advertise a law in our community and of the need for this law to be followed. Students will look at a scenario that shows the impact of what happens when laws are not obeyed.

Wellbeing

Each day students are to be reflective about their learning by completing one of the sentence starters on the daily planner link. This is an important part of their daily learning.

This week Mrs Chadwick invites the students to make a 'Gratitude Jar'. Her video explains how to use it as a powerful means of  looking for little things that make you happy each day and writing statements beginning with; 'I am grateful for...' . The statements are put in the Gratitude Jar and then shared at the end of the week. This task supports our aim to give students the opportunity to have moments of mindfulness and to keep a balanced approach to home learning which is of great importance to their wellbeing.
