Tech Angels

The 'Tech Angels' are back for 2022! What are 'Tech Angels'? I hear you say. Well, they are a group of students from Year 7 and 8 Homerooms that are interested in learning more about Technology (IT) and Audio Visual (AV) at Kilbreda so that they can help others. 'Tech Angels' are the students you can go to if you need help getting the sound to work on the whiteboard or uploading that Google document for your assignment. We are so proud to have so many students apply for this leadership position.

A very special congratulations goes to one of our Year 8 'Tech Angels', Sienna Diacoyannis from 8/52, who has designed the 'Tech Angel' badge for this year! Well done, Sienna.

So far, three classes have created their Virtual Pets using the Micro:bits and various craft materials. We had a lot of fun making these pets and I think you’ll agree, they’re looking great.

Below are some reflections of our students’ favourite parts of working with the Micro:bits.

It was really exciting and a great experience for me to create and make a code with the microchip then make a little toy with it that anyone could use, and it would be really fun to play with.

 Georgette Lamb

Year 8

I very much enjoyed this assessment task. My favourite aspect of this was the fact that we had a very simple idea to work on and we had the opportunity to be creative and really make it our own. The whole process of coding and craft was very enjoyable, and I learnt a lot about how to do simple coding on a microcontroller.

Kaitlyn McCawley

Year 8

My virtual pet is a blue bear with cute pink features. I used materials such as paper, cardboard and pompoms to add the details to his face. The best thing about this STEM project was that we got to learn how to code with micro bits and we had creativity and freedom in our design.

Harper Gould

Year 8

I think that the best thing about this project for me would be designing how my pet was going to look and making that design come to life. I also enjoyed learning about the block codes.

 Catherine Antonopolous

Year 8

I really loved being creative while making my pet (an elephant). I liked using crafts and different colours to make my pet unique. I also loved making the image that appears on my micro:bit. I chose to make an apple being eaten.

Ellie Galileos

Year 8

The best thing about this project was that I had a fun time creating the model of my fox, as well as learning so much about coding. I had so many different ideas for the fox and I’m really happy with the outcome because of how cute it is. The colours look really nice together as well. I’m also happy with how much new coding I have learnt.

Keisha Grunberg

Year 8

My favourite part was designing and making my pet as I like to do art and design things. I also enjoyed doing the coding part.

VCE Applied Computing and Data Analytics

Our VCE Applied Computing students finished up their first SAC this week. For this unit on Data Analytics, students learnt a variety of skills throughout the term including:

  • downloading and scrubbing datasets,
  • searching for patterns and trends in the data using Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel,
  • creating data visualisations to represent their findings,
  • publishing eye-catching infographics on the topic.

Below are some examples of the variety of infographics created by both our Unit 1/2 and 3/4 students this term.
