Highlighting students who are achieving great things in the community

Daniel and Murray Win Gold

Daniel Morrison (9.1) and Murray Yarran (8.4) were recently selected to represent WA in the National Indigenous Basketball Tournament (NIBT). The NIBT is an initiative of none other than a proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander man and NBA star, Patty Mills. Held on the Gold Coast over the holidays, the WA boys and girls team made history when they both won gold in the first ever NIBT.

The Tournament is played between regions from all over Australia with teams selected from the Indigenous Community Basketball League (ICBL) that is played over a six week period in each state. The WA ICBL has been extremely competitive with over 60 boys competing with only 10 spots available in the team. Daniel and Murray were just two of the players selected and were part of the historic team to be crowned as the inaugural championship team.

Daniel is a pure athlete and competes both ends of the court. He loves a chase down block and reads the play really well, as well as knocks down 3s without a problem. Murray is a very crafty point guard who plays with a lot of poise. He can shoot the lights out and you need to be paying attention to catch one of his no look passes!

The boys made a lot of friendships with boys from all over the country and formed extremely close bonds with the boys from SA and NT. Overall it was a week the team will remember forever.

Theo's Surf Life Saving Success

In January, Year 12 student Theo Magne was selected to represent Western Australia in Surf Lifesaving for the Under 23 Men's State Surf Boat Team at the Interstate Championship (ASRL Open) but due to COVID-19, unfortunately it was cancelled. Theo was lucky to compete at the state championships in March where he and his crew won and became state champions!

In Week 10 of Term 1, Theo was off to the Gold Coast to compete in the the 2022 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, known for the biggest and best surf to compete in for Surf Lifesaving. It was an amazing experience and a great opportunity to watch and learn from the very best. Well done Theo!

Australian Youth Water Polo Championships

Three of our Year 12 1st VII Water Polo boys were selected to take part in the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships in Brisbane over the holidays. Damon Jervis represented Melville Sharks, Nic Fry represented SNB Breakers and Jack Hills represented the Adelaide Jets. A special shout out to Damon who won a bronze medal in the Under 18 GOLD competition (8-17). Playing 7 games over 5 days, it was their first interstate competition in two years! A big congratulations to all three boys on their selection and we wish them well for their future in water polo.
