A Monumental Challenge

Congratulations to Nyree Nolan (Year 7), Regan James (Year 8) and Gyanbi Shrestha (Year 9) for their excellent participation and winning the school-based competition which saw them research a famous monument, building or bridge. Each student received a gift voucher for their effort.

Nyree chose to research the Colosseum, in Italy, which was built around 70AD as an entertainment venue by Emperor Vespasian and has 80 arches on each level. The entertainment was gladiator fights, hunting animals and mock water battles.

Regan found the Seagram building, New York, of interest. It was the first glass-clad building in New York City and has bronze tinted windows. The 157m-tall, 38 storey, building resides on Park Avenue.

Gyanbi used her heritage to help her choose her famous monument - the Boudhanath Stupa, in Kathmandu, Nepal, a commemorative monument that houses sacred relics associated with Buddha. The giant stupa is said to be a gateway to heaven serving as a horizon between the earth and sky.

Congratulations Nyree, Regan and Gyanbi!

Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC)

This week, a group of Year 10 students competed in Round 1 of the Australia Brain Bee Challenge. Prior to the competition, the students completed online tasks to study numerous facts about the brain, its functions and Neuroscience. Their knowledge was tested by completing a very challenging online quiz. Thank you to Mr D’Almeida for invigilating the Round 1 quiz.

The Brain Bee Quiz was a great experience for everyone involved. Leading up to the quiz we learnt many interesting facts like how brain information travels up to an impressive 268 miles per hour! With the knowledge that we attained we participated in the quiz on Tuesday. Overall, it was exciting to learn about how the brain functions and we are all motivated to continue this learning about this topic in our further years of study.
